I think we’ve tuned into opposites night. That, or we’re in Bizarro world. People sing bad! Get prizes taken away!
I thought Phil sucked. But it might be that I think he’s freakish looking with his stupid bald head and overly bleached teeth.
Seriously. At this rate, I could be your next American Idol. Which is a very frightening thought, because all that power would go straight to my head and I’d just be impossible to live with.
Heh. LaKisha, getting us back to form. And really surprisingly, I liked this song more when Mikalah Gordon sang it, way back when. Perhaps because of the irony factor.
Lakisha is singing good…
This is the best I’ve seen Lakisha dressed. By far the best performance of the night. Even better than Melinda.
And Randy is right. She did not over do it, which made me happy.
Lakisha is doing “God Bless the Child.” She certainly swings for the fences, doesn’t she?
She’s doing good, but I hate the way they chop these songs up so much to make them fit into a 90 second time slot.
She did just fine. That was pretty enjoyable. Normally I’d advise that the women avoid Billie Holiday comparisons like the plague but that was good. I think lakisha outdid Melinda tonight just by choosing a better song.
We don’t always agree, Dio, but you’re completely right about this. Alert the media.
Wow, Lakisha’s performance was a breath of fresh air. That was superb. I don’t know Diana Ross’ oeuvre very well, but isn’t this the first song tonight that wasn’t originally one of hers? Some producer should be rethinking his or her theme concept…
I loved, loved, loved LaKisha’s dress tonight - she should always wear the dramatic sweeping dresses.
(And she sounded fabulous as usual.)
I believe “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” was originally a hit for Marvin Gaye and Tammy Terrell, but they’re too busy haunting Sanjaya right now to care very much.
Not loving Blake’s performance all that much, but I will say this: his “alternative arrangement” is so far superior to Sligh’s that I don’t believe they’re both from the same planet. But I think Blake might be an alien anyway – although he’s from a different planet from Phil. A more humanoid one.
Blake…I don’t know. This arrangement sounds a little thin. He needs stronger back-up vocals. His dancing was pretty good.
I like Blake and he’ll be back next week but that wasn’t his best by far.
Blake sounded like something from the 80s. Hmm.
I give Blake credit for pushing against the narrow, whitebread, blandness of American Idol. He’s totally wrong for this show.
I didn’t particularly like Blake but, if nothing else, it was interesting and that’ll carry him a long ways.
I don’t know that I was blown away by Blake’s electronica version of that song, but it was a relief not to have to hear yet another classic rendition of it, so on the whole I still liked it.
I don’t think they did, I just mentioned them because others have referenced them.
Low key is much better for her than bombastic.
I like the song that Blake did (though I prefer the Box Tops version to the original), but his version is missing something. If he had more control over the arrangement it would have been better. It really needs background vocals. I think it would sound good with the same type of background vocals as Prince’s song “When Doves Cry”.
It did kind of sound a bit like Kim Wilde’s cover from 1986. (I don’t know that, BTW – I Googled it. I’m not that big a nerd-o.)
I thought Blake’s performance was fun. I think the judges erred on the side of caution with their criticisms this time, and came off sounding stodgy. I suspect this performance will appeal to the tween-teen set who cast the votes. And besides, haven’t the judges been telling the contestants to be unique and memorable? If they can’t accept that when someone actually does it, well, phooey on them.
On edit, what **KSO **said!
I think Phil sounds very much like an 80’s singer.
