Wow, 2gig! I’m glad you caught on to that dude before he could do you harm.
I bowled last night. I bought beer.

It’s part of the business of being in a newsroom - all the prominent female reporters and anchors have stalkers of various types, it’s sort of a rite of passage. They know they have ‘made it’ when letters from prisons start showing up.
As a male photog I have the extra duty of being a sorta bodyguard and being situationally aware at all times.
But TODAY I have the day off in preparation for a fun family visit this weekend. I went to an eye appointment this morning then got new glasses, then came home to do some chores, I’m taking a few minutes to play on the computer, which is hooked up to the tv & entertainment system, so I am listening to iTunes while I type.
Which brings me to this observation: my stereo runs through a Yamaha amp which produces audio starting at -80db and gets louder as you rise to -0.0 then into positive digits. Normally I can hear it quietly at -45. right now it’s moderate at -35, dang loud at -20 and annoy-the-neighbors at -10.
I once ran it at -3 during the opening credit sequence of “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” but that’s as far as I’ve gone.
What amuses me is the fact I have to set it on certain numbers, no exceptions:
Any factor of 5 (-40,-35,-30,-25,-20, etc)
Any factor of 8 (-40,-32,-24,-26 etc)
Any Factor of 11 (-44, -33, -22 etc)
And that’s it. Only those three.
Now considering I stay mostly between -20 and -40 I get -20, -22, -24, -25, -30, -32, -33, -35, -36 and -40, so that’s a good swath of available numbers, but still, what the fuck is up with that?
giggity, I didn’t know you spoke Greek . . .
dB are logarithmic. 10dB is 100 as loud as 1 dB. 100 dB is generally considered to be the threshold of pain.
Any of that help?
Just got an invite to my niece’s wedding shower. I really, really don’t want to go - I just don’t like showers. And since I’ll be up there (it’s being held at my mom’s) the week before to paint her deck, I don’t want to make the trip again. Maybe I’ll just leave a gift and be done with it.
Meanwhile, I did a little raking and transplanting. It’s not supposed to rain till later tomorrow, so I’ll put out some mulch early, before it gets too warm or rainy. I think that’s a plan.
Tonight’s supper will be what I planned for yesterday. I’ve got plenty of time till I have to hack up the cauliflower and pop the poke chops into the toaster oven. So yay!
Yes it makes sense and does help.
When editing stories on Edius nonlinear editing we normalize reporter and interview tracks at -20db and background nats at -40db for air. But certainly the nats are not 1/2 as loud as track.
Our hearing is logarithmic because Darwin designed our ears to hear leaves rustling as well as thunder claps.
I wondered why we have negative dB, and it is of course logarithms, which I should learn to spell, typing it so many times in this post. It is based on a power ratio.
Here is a link.
Read the material.
There will be a test on Tuesday.
Higgs and I went for a walk. She’s crashed. I need to make supper. I don’t wanna make supper - I want it to magically appear.
Yeah, like that’ll happen…
Pizza delivery, Chinese delivery, etc.
Magic!
Turns out I don’t need magic. I’ve got 2 poke chops cooking away, both salads are built, and the cauliflower is half-cooked - just 2 more minutes and it’ll be good to go. I’ve got about 10 minutes to kill.
It’s starting to cloud over and it’s definitely cooler than it was an hour ago. Guess it’s time to close up the house till tomorrow. But that’s OK - we got lots of fresh air blowing thru here today.
This is my season - not too hot, not too cold (most of the time), decent amount of sun, purty flowers blooming. Yep, spring is good!
So the DM came by ,so I din’t get much done ,but I did learn some things ,so there’s that. Booster Club meeting in a bit, so that takes care of dinner.
You’re still cute, you’re just legal now. How ya doin’?![]()
Is that how loud it gets when you crank it to “11”?
FCM, how does being stabby qualify as “nice”?:dubious:
It qualifies for dammit.
How does it not? You got a problem, bub??

Supper was yum. And my sweetie did the dishes. A night of chillage shall follow. I hope.
I always thought scaling the volume knob on a home audio amp in terms of -dB was a slightly silly pretense of looking “professional.” In a studio where everything’s calibrated to a defined maximum level, scaling things to “unity” gain makes perfect sense, especially in this digital world where 0 dB is a hard maximum that must not be exceeded uless you want to turn your sound into nasty static. Your engineers probably prefer to run at -3 dB as a maximum so there’s some headroom in case of unexpected loud sounds on a track.
The home amp doesn’t know what kind of speakers you have, how efficient they are, how much carpeting and soft stuff is in the room to eat sound, etc., so the actual volume at a given knob setting will be different from one person’s setup to another.
We run into this at my church, when I’m rehearsing with the worship team prior to the service. During rehearsal, playing into an empty room, everything seems so freaking loud. But then, once the service starts and the room is full of warm bodies, and the whole congregation is singing back at us just like we’re singing/playing at them, we don’t feel “too loud” at all. Not to mention that all of those bodies really soak up my bass, making it seem not so loud after all.
Well, in that case I’m totally screwed.
That goes beyond cuteness and borders on adorable. Since I don’t have to worry about my ex-boss and his ex-rules I could add something like that to Facebook ------ assuming I knew how. I don’t. Even this darn signature thing here is giving me fits.
PS – if anyone wants my Facebook name, PM me.
I actually know lots of people who have used that expression for years and ages including Cousin Walter the Pollock and two brothers I grew up with; Stash and Joe. It is indeed something of a Polish traditional saying.
I am still having issues with the signature thing. It never did show me yours (I guess I have to show you mine first?) and it keeps turning itself off for me even though I did the human test and all. I sign out and it reverts to hide. May play with it more some other day.
Shunned, indeed.
It isn’t that difficult. Email me you password and sig, I’ll fix you up. I do that at work for some users.
Heh heh heh.
I believe the manufacturer is attempting to impress the customer concerning the quality of their product. It is still indicative of what is happening in the electronics, however. This is an industry where most companies bias a transistor with one resistor instead of two, depending upon Beta gain to give them a ball park indication of gain, instead of two resistors, defining gain as Beta independent, to save a nickel per stage.
Yes, I am an Engineer. Do you realize how infrequently I get to talk about things like this? :dubious:
Let me check my list of Mumpers I implicitly trust -----
Swampbear - check
Dogbutler - check
FCM - check
Red - checked and with a little added star
There are a few others but I don’t seem to see you mentioned. I’ll send a note to the Head Office reporting the oversight and get back to you later. ![]()
