Another sleepless MMP

Slow night here. Heading off to watch Vikings. I plan to follow that show until they get to Super Bowl IV. From that point on I already know the disappointment.

I don’t speak your crazy moon language.

Hello, friends. I have barely read or retained. This week has been chaotic and I am feeling overwhelmed in almost every area of life. The good news is that there are only 28 more school days left. I just got the end of year field trip schedule and there are something like 5 field trips in 7 days that I am scheduled to go to!

And typing this reminds me that I need to get ready for school tomorrow. We’re cooking and I need to gather my stuff to take with me.

I cannot find a place to enable sigs to be read. Hey DOOGIOOO. can I pm you my login info and you take a look for me?

Think I found it

My DVD did record that show and I just watched it. Very interesting! Thanks for pointing that out, FCM.

And the show does point out that, while mathematicians are about precision and exactness, it’s the engineers who use mathematics to a ‘just good enough’ standard in their practical applications and building things. The engineers make mathematics useful.

Ruble, not all sigs are visible all the time. The poster has to check the “Show Your Signature” box, or set their profile to always show it. Most people choose the former.

eta: they did away with the formatting in the sig itself, which is why I never added the wet trout to mine.

Up, caffeinated, and off to work.

Glad it didn’t disappoint.

I’ve always considered engineering to be the art of compromise. In the real world, nothing is perfect (tho I’m damned close! :D) so a designer must make assumptions. For example, a certain grade of aluminum would have specific characteristics if manufactured from perfect raw materials in a perfect process. To compensate, an engineer will size the material with a safety factor: if the math says we can make this part with a 1" bar, we’ll use a 1.25" bar so we know it’ll work. Or we compute that 10 rivets will do the job, so let’s use 15.

Then there’s the ever popular: Good, Fast, Cheap - pick 2.

OK, end of engineering lecture. It’s too early…

**kopek **- my family root are as Polish as one can get - paternal grandparents and maternal great-grandparents all arrived from the old country in the early 1900s. Dad’s parents barely spoke English. Yet I never heard of that saying till my sister linked to it on FB. So I put it on some t-shirts!

Good morning, all! It’s rainy. When I woke at 2-ish, it was raining, but according to the weather radar on channel 7, it’s just about out of the area. I’ve decided to make my grocery run early today - that way, if it dries out some, I can do some mulching. Plus I need to hang around for the delivery of FCD’s welder - FedEx is bringing it today. Beyond that, we shall see what the day brings. Happy Firday!!!

Happy Firday and can you send some of that rain my way? We could sure use it!

A joke, to illustrate the difference between mathematicians (like me) and engineers (like FCM):
Put three people in a class room. At one end is a beautiful model. At the other end are a mathematician and an engineer. The constraint of this ‘game’ is that after each minute, the engineer and mathematician are allowed to cover half the distance to the model. For each minute, halve the distance again.

The mathematician quickly realizes they will never actually reach the model, and in a huff, walks out of the room.

The engineer realizes that while they may never actually reach the model, they will get close enough for practical purposes, and proceeds to approach.

Happy Firday!
ETA: to be precise, my major was Applied Mathematics - and I would realize the practical application of the above exercise.

There are swings in my city at this time of year. They play music as people swing on them. I always like to swing on them while they’re around.

Yesterday I was planning to go downtown to a couple of concerts, and leave home a little earlier so I’d have time to swing on the musical swings before the concerts. Then, as I was in the subway, it stopped for a while. I then worried that I wouldn’t have time to play on the swings. I then realized, “I’m getting bummed that I may not get my swing playtime. I feel like such a little kid!” :stuck_out_tongue:

But all was well, the subway didn’t stop for long, and I did indeed get my swing playtime.

It’s nice that people of all ages get to enjoy the musical swings. I’ve seen businessmen in suits swinging on them, as well as young children, and everyone in between.

It was still drizzly, but I went to the grocery store. I’m now home. The sun is out. It figures…

I have about zero motivation. I should get outside with a rake. Maybe I will eventually. It’s still a bit chilly out and we may get more rain this afternoon. I suppose I spread cartload of mulch and be done with it. Still thinking…

And I was just looking at the invite to my niece’s shower. It features at least 5 different fonts. Kids these days…

Who’d have guessed that **Midget **was a swinger???

Hahaha

Paging Vunderboob.

Bob. Paging Vunderbob.

I can remember hearing it back when I was in grade school or before. Somewhere in the back of my brain it exists in Polish but I can’t quite pull it up now. I know a Polish RL friend Dave who has used it on Facebook; maybe he started the trend there?

One of the other original worker-bees from when we opened the building is having his last day today. He got a new super-cool job building and improving hiking trails in NY and NJ. We are celebrating by declaring a “beer:thirty” after work. So I may see you all later but if I don’t remember – the liver is evil and must be punished.

In Polish.

I think I’ll go move a little mulch while it’s sunny. At least I’ll feel like I accomplished something.

Happy Firday!

Y’all are so happy, cheerful and playful this am., I thought damn how do they do that.
Then I realized it’s not so early anymore, almost 11.

Irk has been busy this morning, which is a good thing.

It was sunny earlier, now it’s overcast. It’s supposed to rain but at least it’s warm out.

Happy Friday everybody!
It was a busy workweek for me but it’s over at last… LONG LIVE WEEKENDS!
Work started on my driveway at last yesterday - the drive is finished, but they didn’t complete the work on the lawn - it was all chunked and dug up from the tree removal last year so I set up to have the guys doing the drive smooth it all out and fill in holes, and lay down a good layer of black dirt so I can re-seed it and make a nice lawn again. They haven’t done that part. They plowed about half of it up… and left it like that. So I will be heading down to their office today to find out when they intend to finish the job - and THEY WILL FINISH IT. I will see to that. What is it with contractors that you have to babysit them to get everything done the way it was agreed? sigh I hate arguing. Had to fight with the tree guys last year… the plumbers the year before… next up will be the blacktoppers… hopefully that one won’t be so bad. Only so much that needs doing with that, right?

Oh! And I just gotta share my kitten with you guys - Nicky is now 7 months old and already bigger than my 10 year old Rummy!
Nicky on the left - Rummy on the right No he isn’t fat - he is solid muscle, and like a heavy brick to pick up. I’m seriously considering taking him to the vet for a weigh-in. I’m curious. He’s a Siberian, and was the only kitten in his litter, so I knew he’d be big anyway - but he is definitely looking to be bigger than the average for that breed already! If he wasn’t such a dainty eater, I’d be seriously concerned with how to feed him as an adult. Maybe a side of beef every week?
Have a good one, everybody!
Oh… and Kopek - should we send a wheelbarrow to pick you up after the beer:thirty celebration?

Cute kitties!

I did an hour of mulching - go me!! Mulchage goes from the side of the garage by the fence, around the corner, up to the back garage door, and a little way past it. Then I ran out of steam. I’ll finish tomorrow. Today, I’m done! I got a blister and everything!!! <whine whine>

Supper will involve ham. I took a ham steak out to thaw. What I’ll do with it now is still up in the air, but I’m thinking it’ll involve pasta. TBD.

For now, I’m going to sit and drink my purple and chill. It’s 69° outside, so the windows are open and I can hear the birds singing. Yay!
