Saw the first ep and liked it, although there weren’t as many belly laughs as early *Archer *seasons. Good setup, though, and the dynamics of the ex-ISIS gang are just as bitchy and predictable as ever, even in spaaaaace. Nice touch to have Babou the Ocelot on the starship Seamus crew patch. And great to have Barry back as a mob-boss robot!
I liked spotting the many sf homages:
Alien/Aliens - the starship bridge’s design and hypersleep capsules; Krieger as an Ash/Bishop android Battlestar Galactica - the laser cannon Star Wars - defending against attacking fighters Firefly/Serenity - Ray as an onboard courtesan Fantastic Four - Pam as the Thing
I vaguely recall the initial little floaty-hologram Malory computer program as being from an sf show, movie (Tron?) or videogame, but can’t place it (or her).
I’ve now seen all of them so far this season. The one with Pam’s egg-laying alien “sandwich” reminded me of ST:TOS “The Other Side of Paradise,” with the spores which released all inhibitions, or the virus from “The Naked Time.” And the giant space octopus that swallowed the *Seamus *of course was a lot like the giant space worm of The Empire Strikes Back (bonus points for the Mynocks-chewing-power-cables reference). I’m enjoying this season, although I have to say Archer: 1999 just isn’t as deliriously funny as the first few seasons.
Favorite lines:
"And they called me mad!"
“Who did?”
“Huh? I guess I just assumed.”
“I’m writing what I’ve always dreamed of - a rock musical about the Teapot Dome Scandal!”
“I don’t wanna live in a world where Cyril’s cool.”
I think this season is better than last season, but still not peak Archer. One thing that helps is that they dropped the whole Archer in a coma plot; it’s just Archer in spaaaaace! if it’s funny, they could do this with any genre, Archer in the Old West, Archer in a fantasy setting, but it has to be funny.
There was also a floaty thing in Automan that would materialize Automan and his Lamborghini and other stuff, but a moment’s thought shows that the visual style there was simply tantamount to Tron.
Is Archer not in a coma anymore? I thought these last seasons were a kind of Incident at Ox-Bow Bridge, although I would like a happy ending for Archer, Lana, and their baby.
