Cake Day - A Sweet Treat in the MMP

In my first classroom of the day, faculty are enjoined to keep windows closed so the theoretically refurbished HVAC can cleanse the air. The room has several old metal radiators that are on from mid-October to the end of April, so with the wondows closed, the room is Sahara-dry and over 80°F.

Morning all. I don;t know what they put in that Ny-Quil (I have the ‘Severe’ blend) knocked me out for 9 hours of uninterrupted sleep again. Feeling better, still have the nagging cough, but might make it to the gym for sauna and whirlpool at least, if I don’t feel up to swimmin’. At least will get me out of the house. Paper rescued and pill taken.

susie, 80F is a bit warm, usually that reduces my clothing to briefs and socks, but I don’t think the school administration would approve. Hope your air is better today.

FCM, good luck with the T-day meal planning, my only responsibility is to drive the 400 miles up to my brother’s place and back again. And I really don’t see much difference in the Loews and Home Depot here, they are located nearly side-by-side, which I have seen in other locations too. Why, I don’t know.

OK, that’s about all for now… Onward into Hump Day. Take care all.

Feel better! Glad the Nyquil helped.

Briefs and socks probably wouldn’t fly because at my age,* it would decrease student retention.

*though the bilateral mastectomies might draw in the crowds.

A balmy 37 degrees this morning. The bottom will drop out in the next few days and we’ll be in single digits/teens for awhile. Looks like clear sailing for T-day, so we’ll be doing dinner with my daughter and my youngest son and some of their brood. Makes me happy.

Ordered myself some winter boots after seeing the wife’s new Uggs. Gonna give my Sorels to a homeless place, as I don’t need anything that heavy duty. We also dug out our scarves, knit hats, gloves, mittens, and ice cleats. The wife still has the parka she bought in Anchorage, so she’ll be toasty.

The fuzzy replacement insoles should arrive tonight so I can try them in boots.

Good morning and happy Woden’s Day! I’m going to wall and take a bus to the eye clinic because my back-up contact arrived. When I had NO contact and was desperate, it took over 2 months to get one. The back-up took 2 weeks. Go figure.

I also have to call the itch doc. The new med is helping somewhat with the itching, BUT it was making my heart beat fast, and I was getting long sequences of skipped beats. So I stopped taking it, and my heart settled down. I’m on 4 antihistamines simultaneously without counting the new one. I don’t think that’s healthy, but what can I do?

I’ve avoided Home Depot ever since my DIL, who loves to remodel and can mud a wall like the pros, stopped going there 10 years ago for political reasons. It’s crazy how politics impacts things like shopping, but then, a lot of stuff is bonkers these days.

FCM, I’d need two kitchens and a staff of 4 to get all that done, which means you’ll be able to do it on your own. You are mighty, swift, and strong…plus very organized.

quietly, that temp thing does sound maddening. My classroom was consistently freezing, and all kids on the south side, under the blowers, wore coats and fingerless gloves. Heating company insisted the temp was fine. Finally, after 10 years of this, their solution was to put baffles under the blowers. Then ALL the kids had to wear coats to class.

MetalMouse, I hope the sauna helps the crud.

Swampy, that goddaughter of yours is one smart cookie! Next she’ll be hanging tights instead of a stocking on Christmas Eve.

Morning all. My weather app says it’s 33f, but the thermometer on our porch says it’s 30f. Supposed to get up to a blazing 42f today. Not supposed to rain for a few days though.

Did a dumb thing yesterday. Stuck my tape measure down the hole I’d cut for the GFCI and got it stuck in there. Spent a couple of hours trying to get it unstuck. Today I need to devise some sort of tool to stick down there and get it loose.

In case anyone is wondering the plan is/was to run wire from the service entrance across the basement ceiling and up inside the wall next to the sink to a GFCI. (Because there’s only one outlet in the whole bathroom and it’s down by the floor next to the tub.) Then run a wire back down from the GFCI into the basement and over to the wall where the fan will live and up in the wall to a timer and thence to the fan. That was the plan anyway.

Nellie, don’t tell me I have to quit going to Home Depot for political reasons. :scream: They’re the only semi-inexpensive big box store around here. (And they’re 40 miles away.) Lowes doesn’t like this part of the state enough to build here. We’ve got a good little hardware store right here in town and they’ll order anything you want, but it’ll take a few days.

I’m pretty much done with politics of any kind now anyway. The ‘woke’ folks over in Portland put one of the stupidest, not-thought-out-est, ‘gun control’ measures on the ballot in the mid terms, and got it passed. :scream: It’s guaranteed to piss off all the moderate gun owners and more than a few liberal gun owners in the state. Orygun will likely go red in 2024. sigh.

I give up.

I quit going there years ago as they are the least helpful people I’ve ever dealt with when it comes to not only being ignorant about how things work, but also in having no idea where anything is in the store. I’m convinced that they actively avoid having to assist customers.

I wouldn’t worry too much about it, as the NRA will file suit and likely prevail, and folks can go back to killing each other with few restrictions.

So once again the belt was not pulling the bags up the incline, so Super Ken had to get on and push. Then none of my regular team showed up, so they sent 4 Blueberries, who made up for their lack of job knowledge with enthusiasm that was a danger to themselves and me. Then I got sent up to the mez, where the one work station didn’t have a working scanner, so I had to type everything… And then the gathering belt that takes the mez work, misorts, and work out of Smalls broke. :grimacing: And Peak hasn’t started yet. < guzzles gin >

Note to self: schedule the MetalMouse portion of the “Lottery Win Show Up Drunk on Mumper Lawns” for winter.

The PSWSLS got him, or did your friend make sure exam officer is now sleeping with the fishes?

Well, it depends on your politics. If you agree with them politically, it’s a win! If you don’t support the Sedition Caucus, maybe not so much…

I have no desire to debate ‘gun control’ here, or anywhere for that matter, except to say that there are any number of additions/modifications to existing laws that might actually do some good and that moderates and/or independents (like myself) can get behind. Measure 114 wasn’t/isn’t any of those. And I don’t have any faith whatsoever in the NRA filing suit. Haven’t for many a year.

You’ve lost me there. Could you point me to someplace that explains what Home Depot has to do with the sedition caucus?

Never mind. I found it.

New Personal Best, according to MapMyWalk: Average 3.28 mph over 3.13 miles.

When I read your notes I am often reminded of graduate school and then very grateful that I am not in academia anymore. I wish you strength for the week ahead.

metalmouse I hope you feel better soon! It sounds like it’s lingering, stupid virus. I hope the sauna helps. Sending virtual orange juice and chicken soup.

I was starting to panic about Turkey Day and the my brother-in-law announced he wants to handle it. He used to run a catering business and every once in a while he likes to host a great feast and he wants to do it all himself. No helping wanted or welcome. Huzzah! I’m going to make some shrimp dip anyway, because it’s yummy and I wants to.

That’s nice of you. I know they need winter gear to hand out this time of year.

It sounds like you need a rum barrel like the British navy used to keep on ships. Everybody has their allotment of grog before they start the day. :beers:

flyboy good job! :star:

Neighbor down the street has parked his giant truck out front with 3 enormous flags: US, Trump, and more Trump. I’ve been contemplating appropriate responses and I think the HOA might just fit the bill. My daughter requested I not do anything criminal, but I told her that all of the doorbell cameras prevented me from slashing tires anyway.

Drama continues with my now-fired ex-property manager. He’s been given written notice that he’s fired and I hope he just goes away.

Other than that, my head hurts and I’m going to take a break for a bit.

Take care everyone.

Could you PM it to me? I couldn’t ferret out the connection to Home Depot and I’d like to know it before spending any of my hard earned shekels at said store.

I already don’t buy at Hobby Lobby, no matter how badly I need it. They are just a woman-hating bridge too far for me. YMMV and I’d respect that.

Go, Cat, go!

I gave in yesterday and bought a bone in turkey breast. I will be home alone so am going to free lance cooking my T’g :turkey: in my brand spanking new Mumper benevolence crockpot. Got some huge sweet potatoes to cook with it and a big Iowa squash that will go in the pot too, a melange for easy low and slow cooking. My plan is to do it in my pajamas and slippers, interspersed with reading the 3 novels by favorite authors I just picked up today on hold at the library. Stovetop stuffing and green beans already stocked in the pantry to round it out. If my ambition holds I’ll buy one of those manhole cover sized pumpkin pies at Costco for dessert (and probably brunch also if the truth is known). Have two half full cans of whipped cream begging to be spritzed on top. I’ll stash 3/4ers of the pie in the freezer in ziplocs when I bring it home because last years taught me that 2 people can’t eat one while it is still fresh. Frozen pie can come back out of the freezer for Christmas and New Years that way. Pretty sure I have my favorite Trader Joe’s fresh cranberry orange relish lurking in the freezer too.

We went to 3 groceries and found the Thanksgiving-related sections shockingly denuded. Got turkey wings rather than thighs for making the gravy, no acceptable bread for making the gluten-free stuffing. Fortunately, we’re not on turkey-duty per se and nephew has one ordered.

We’ll see what and how much I can eat next week; the Ozempic is pretty effective thus far for killing my appetite/making me slightly queasy.

Happy Hump Day!

Chilly this morning.
We got the dogs off to daycare. Ripple slipped his collar inside and ran out the door as somebody was coming in. Fortunately, people saw him and everybody stopped what they were doing, and he just ran to the truck.
When Echo and Cerby saw him take off, they wanted to go with him.
I felt bad taking him back inside, but I wanted a dog free day to get some stuff done.

And not much got done.

I think our Thanksgiving will be buying some turkey tv dinners. I have no idea what is going on with the family, and if I don’t have to drive down to the armpit, that is fine by me. I’ll get my son some cranberry sauce and a pumpkin pie and he’ll be happy.

I think I’m done with my pre-feast shopping. I went to Food Lion and got some stuff for the b-day party on Sunday. I expect a fair bit of it will carry over to Tuesday’s early turkey day. And I’ve decided I’m not going to make deviled eggs - there’s too much food already.

Tomorrow will be my last Tobias day till after Thanksgiving. Daughter has off all next week. On Firday, I’ll give the basement a good cleaning and bring in a load of firewood so it’ll be dry and ready if it gets cold enough. Saturday, I’ll make the pulled poke. Moanday will be baking day - 2 punkin pies and a big gingerbread. I think I’ll also build the sweet potato casserole (NO MARSHMALLOWS!!!) so it’s ready to pop in the oven on Tuesday.

I’ve been looking at low-and-slow roasting recipes - several mention basting. I’ve never basted a turkey, including when I did low-and-slow. Heck, the one I just smoked didn’t get basted and it was so moist! (yeah, I sampled a wee bit.) Where stand ye all on basting?

Day is done. I’ve made one hat already and I’m going to start on another shortly. That will be the balance of my evening.
