I just use the oven bags. Better results with less hassle. OK, so it’s not magazine-cover pretty when cooked, but I don’t really care about that part.
Part of my family and marital deal is that I don’t have to cook the turkey. That said, those who do seem to baste!
Howdy Y’all! Provisions got procured (everything needed for the feast plus some extra of some staples so’s we don’t have to venture to the sto’ next week), nappage and day drinkin’ were accomplished. Also, sup got fixed and et up and then the kitchen cleanded up. Mr. Tom Turkey is now occupyin’ space in the beerator since he is frozen solid. The new undies I ordered from Wally* World
arrived today. I have twelve pairs of brand new boxer shorts. Thus has it been in swampland.
Lowe’s and Home Depot are across the street from each other here. We go to Lowe’s because it’s the easier one to get in and out of and it is somewhat cheaper than the Despot IMO. Of course, if at all possible we go to neither one.
MOOOOOOM two big things in a week is a lot of cookin’ and doin’. We are doin’ the turkey, dressin, sweet N.O.T. casserole (no marshmallows here either), pee-kahn pie, and the giblet gravy, cause if the gravy ain’t right might as well throw everything else out. We shall also provide the canned cranberry stuff cause that’s what we like. Other folks are bringin’ other sides. It will be a feast! Oh and I have never basted a turkey. The biiiiiiiiiiiig covered roastin’ pan I use makes for a juicy and tender turkey everytime.
sari I love the Turkey Day feast, but honestly, if it were just the two of us, I’d be very tempted to go with the turkey tv dinners.
We don’t do pumpkin anything. There will be sweet N.O.T. pie but I will not make said pie. I am told there will also be German chawklit cake. This makes me extremely happy.
Nettie if she thought she could get away with hangin’ tights, she would. The stinker! We ordered several plushy toy things she wants for Christmas and they came today. Strange lookin’ things they are, but she wants and they were relatively inexpensive, so win-win!
butters, Nelson is ~17# and thanks to a corgi grandparent, has a long back. This coat is long enough to cover his hips while still leaving room beneath to lift a leg.
doggio, we’re handling trade ins and overstock for a carrier that markets to seniors, so I wouldn’t be surprised to take a crash course on resetting a telegraph for this project.
Yay on the backup contact nellie. When the weather is too cold or rainy for a whole weekend to go to the dog park, I take him to dog friendly stores for an outing. The Lowe’s close to me tends to spoil him rotten in most departments and the ladies in the paint department at HD always have a treat and skritch for him. I generally shop at Lowe’s though.
Arrrrrrgh! More old tech today. I’m beginning to hope that we don’t land this as a permanent account. There was a meeting between quality and finance this afternoon near my irk station and they did ask me what some of the issues were. Don’t worry! I used professional language. I also trained two people from another department to wipe androids (they have both irked there for a number of years, but only on Apple products). They were cussing in two more languages than I was.
Stay safe and healthy y’all!
My drive home from the shop took an hour, instead of the usual 25 minutes. Who knew that one block of a street being closed due to downed power lines could cause that much havoc? Perhaps everyone, since it was closed last week for water main repair. Maybe get a cop out there to direct traffic.
I brine instead of basting.
Evening all. I did make it to the gym, 30 minutes in the whirlpool and 25 in the sauna along with a shower did wonders for my outlook on life. Feeling much better this evening, I think I’ll medicate again tonight and see if I can get another 8+ hours of uninterrupted sleep, and that will hopefully finish off whatever bug was bothering me. Also need to take the trash out, I normally only need to do that every other week but next Wednesday I’ll be at Brother’s for the holiday so best get it done this week.
VanGo, glad you made it home OK; I live on a cul-de-sac and always worry about something blocking me off (or keeping me in) someday. The electric lines are buried here, so no power lines to fall down at least.
Used up the bacon due to expire tomorrow tonight for BLT’s, so don’t have to throw food out, but I do need to check on a few other things and try to manage the food stores for my upcoming visits to Brothers and the February travels.
Sunny, had chicken noodle soup today, it was Campbell’s and out of a can but still pretty good.
doggio, I don;t always understand what you type, but I think the gin was a apt reward for putting up with it. And winter is usually sweat pants and sweat shirt.
Bumba, GFCI = ground-fault circuit interrupter, correct? Have fun wiring.
OK, need to get that garbage can outside while it’s still above freezing (36F right now at 8pm local). Catch y’all on Thorsday.
There’s really no point. All you’re doing is cooling down your oven every time you open the door. Most commercial frozen turkeys have been brined or are self-basting. Also, smearing stuff on the skin does nothing for the meat. If you really feel the need to do something like that, then pry the skin away from the breast meat, mix up some butter and herbs, and smear the concoction between the meat and skin. I tent the breast with foil until the end, but that’s it. No bags, no spatchcocking, no upside-down bird, no brining. Just roast the bloody thing.
One option is to get a kosher turkey. I believe that they’re already brined, so all you need to do is roast.
I don’t. I’ve been using a roasting bag for over two decades, and it’s never failed. (Not cooking this year. We’ll hit a buffet.)
Haven’t stopped worrying.
My mother is a retired teacher. As a general rule, she liked her job. Her classrooms were always freezing or sweltering, often on the same day. I heard MANY stories of this.
Uggs make you look like you have clunky, ugly muppet feet. And they are so warm and comfy and easy to put on and take off and have good traction and last forever. I bought the pair I am currently wearing while back in 2017 and they are still as warm and comfy as the first day I put them on.
Can you tell I love my Uggs? I got to worrying about the companies long term survival cause I’m going to need another pair of Uggs in five years or so, but they are pretty popular so I’m thinking they will be all right.
How about a wire coat hanger with duct tape on the end? Sometimes old school fixes are the best
I was thinking it was his Thomas the Train slippers myself. If I could have bunny slippers, I wouldn’t show them to anyone but my BFF.
If you brine it, you shouldn’t need to baste it unless you want to.
I’m going to bet that your secret admirer is just loving this. I’m jealous that it wasn’t me cause I know I’d be thrilled with every update.
I hadn’t thought about your new drug and Thanksgiving. I hope you feel well enough to have at least a few bites of your favorite foods.
Mom and I have repeatedly invited Hubs to have T-day dinner with us in Phoenix but he thinks he’d rather eat leftovers and kill monsters online. We will do our T-day dinner the following Thursday so he doesn’t have to miss the pleasure of cooking a big feast for a couple of old ladies who will eat a slice of turkey, some mashed potatoes and gravy and call it good. It’s tradition after all.
I did realize that I will need to go to the dispensary while Mom is here (my consumption is fairly predictable) so I might go to a new dispensary in Phx and see what sort of first time customer deals I can get.
Marie Calendars does wonderful frozen turkey and gravy meals. I can’t call that sort of thing a TV dinner because I am old enough to know what REAL TV dinners were. (Those deserts in the little middle depression were pretty good, though…)
I still know folks who work records management for a government office. They tell me that a super big issue they are having is that tech has changed so much but they records haven’t been updated, so if they need to go back and look at the original records from 20 years ago, first they have to find a working machine capable of reading the records. Retirement is so wonderful, LOL.
Today was surplus produce day and it was cold. Like under 40F and my car was cold and the drive was so short that the car didn’t warm up almost until I was home again. I took the twins mom their food and she pointed out the things she was really happy about, like the fish patties and apples. When she saw the eggplant she looked like she was going to cry because they are so tasty, but so pricey and she likes feeding the twins all sorts of different things.
They have applied for and are starting to get financial assistance. The legless father is taking classes because his roofing career is over but can’t be fit with a prosthesis for months because the folks who make them are so far behind.
So, I had a horrible night last night, one stress dream after another and woke up with an ocular migraine, which sucked. I still have a horrible headache but at least I can see again, so off I go to get more drugs and hope to stop freaking out over politics.
Hello again. I made my way to the eye clinic, picked up the contact lens, and managed to get in to see the surgery counselor. She said the business office was supposed to call me with the OOP amount for the surgery. Since they didn’t, she went over and came back with a quote: $1,100. I can swing that but would rather not. I also got the code for the procedure AND a printout of the ophthalmologist’s notes from my last appointment. At first I wanted to say, “Can’t YOU deal with Medicare?” but then I realized it’d be weeks or longer before she got around to it, so it’s better that I handle it for now.
I walked over 5 miles today. Tomorrow I should get in 8 miles because I have to walk to the dentist’s and then the grocery store.
Basting: I rub herbed butter between the skin and the bird, rub a little butter on the outside, and pour broth into the cavity so it steams the interior. I usually skip basting.
True Confession: I’ve never made dressing (stuffing) from scratch. I used to watch Mom do it, but I’ve always been afraid I’d end up with some waterlogged bits and some dry ones. Any tips? I want to do dressing from scratch this year.
I had no idea this existed! I’ll try to get to TJ’s on Friday. Thank you!
susan, ugh on feeling queasy. Will that go away with time? I sure hope so.
MetalMouse, I’m so glad you’re feeling better! I hope lots of good sleep tonight will send those germs packing.
flyboy, I’m impressed with your speed! Do you walk the same route each day or try to vary it?
I read that as “Happy Humpy Day” and thought maybe Humpy Mom brought him to the park. Did you say Cerby’s on Trazodone? My son’s border collie has anxiety issues and is on Trazodone, but the vet said it slows down the dog but doesn’t relieve the anxiety. My son’s going to wean the dog off of it and try something that treats the underlying anxiety. i don’t really understand it but thought I’d pass it along.
swampy, I wish you were my kids’ godfather. Seriously, you’re da bomb.
I had a brined bird once years ago. I wasn’t impressed enough to want to do it myself. Plus the gravy made from the drippings was gawd-awful salty. No thanks.
One thing I saw on a couple of recipes was to let the bird sit uncovered in the fridge for up to 48 hours before roasting. It supposedly makes for really crispy skin. I don’t know if I could do that. Need to make the decision soon, tho.
But now it’s sleepy-bye time. Zzzzzzzzzzzzz
Thanks. It’s unclear. For many it does, though things like which foods you eat may play a role, or maybe hydration, or maybe taking papaya enzyme, or… It’s a nuisance right now, and I hope it doesn’t get worse. I have bought the papaya enzyme to try, and ordered a Reliefband, which is a TENS-style acupressure point stimulating wrist band. It’s supposed to work for all kinds of nausea.
It’s like the fresh cranberry relish that also has an orange, peel and all, ground up with the cranberries.
I just went and checked their Thanksgiving Frequent Flyer ad and they list the relish, so they are still making it. Mine is in the freezer from last holiday time, so I wasn’t sure. It is sold in a 16ox round plastic tub, like a deli container. My Trader Joe’s has it in the produce area, right around where they sell their hummus. Buy two~one to eat next week and one to freeze and enjoy during the dreary days of March.
I bet if you asked they also have some fail-proof stuffing fixes for you too.
I used to vary my walks, but this is the longest route. I walk on the street, down the beach, and I walk on the berm up the beach.
It is 10:56 P.M. EST, and I an hear Alex Catt snoring from the other side of the apartment. Also, it’s martini night, with ginger teriyaki chicken stirfry.
For Thanksgiving, I’m going out to The Quay. Although past Thanksgiving dinner at home have included canned Chunking chop suey, and Blackened Cornish Hen with red beans and rice.
I had a friend who worked at AT&T who told be the time they were trying to fix some legacy tech.
Friend: “Maybe we can cal the engineer who designed this?”
< looks at date on blueprint >
Friend: “We probably need a Ouija Board.”
Ha! My mom’s a Manhattan drinker.
Turn her on to Vieux Carrés.
Now I want one.
I am offended on your behalf. Harumph!
I remember those. We rarely had them, but we kids were always so excited. It seemed like a special treat to us.
