Well, I said I really live on hoagies. Lettuce, tomato, onion… At least I get some vegetables every!
That’s really weird, all of the Googled donair recipes called for ground meat. Yet, in this thread, many of your are referring to the common vertical rotisserie ubiquitous among so many Greek restaurants that serve gyros. I think we all just happen to be in violent agreement.
I have had gyros that ranged from nearly the flavor(lessness) of ground beef, all the way out to quite spicy. A good gyros usually is a combination of ground beef and lamb that is mixed with some ground bulgur wheat and spices, then compressed into a large inverted cone. This is slow cooked, then sliced off and finished on a grill if it is not already crispy enough.
Let us all agree that tzatziki sauce is spooje of the gods. My friend’s falafel shack has gyros but, incredibly, no tzatziki. [insert one bazillion frowning smilies >here<] Yiazoo, another local Greek restaurant has good gyros, but they mix dill weed into their tzatziki, which is at least a form of mild heresy.
I am still searching for a really good gyros in Silicon Valley (recommendations welcome). It has been almost fifteen years since The Great Gyros closed in the basement food court of Valco Mall. I have not had a decent one since. You most definitely do not want to ask me about the gyros I had in the main Frankfurt train station. A pile of slimey ill seasoned gristle does not even begin to describe the travesty I was served. Quite easily, the pita bread was the best tasting part.
I strongly urge all of you to try sliced gyros in a falafel sometime. It is the perfect way to utterly contaminate such a pristinely vegetarian dish.
Sonic all the way…anything from Sonic is excellent…Sonic sounds good…talk about a 3 o’clock craving…
mmm…Sonic…
I have a Sonic very close to me. I am glad I haven’t got hooked on them yet. They are rather tasty though, I do agree.
What no popcorn chicken from KFC?
I love those little chicken flavoured bits of fried grease with their gravy.
And unfortunately McDonald’s Fries … ummmmmmmmm fries. Their sausage and cheese McMuffins rate an honerable mention, though.
Man I started a diet this week!
I love tzatziki. I’m going to make some today to go with all the pita I bought on Friday. I also have hummus.
I think that’s my menu for today.
As mentioned in other threads, I love poutine, the French Canadian concoction of fries, cheese curds and gravy. Unfortunately it’s difficult to get good poutine in Toronto. Right now I’m longing for an Ottawa Eligin Street Diner four-cheese poutine- about two pounds of grease.
Nothing else compares.
Just reading that made my arteries squeal like a stuck pig.
Wasn’t that a line in the great film classic, Delivery?
Another one for Canadian-style Donair. My GOD I miss them. A Gyro is not the same thing, I found out the hard way. Here, a gyro is lamb or lamb-and-beef. At home, it’s beeeeeeef, baby! And the sweet sauce which has an appearance which is vaguely reminiscent of semen. No onions - because raw onions suck. Oh boy. Time to go to north, again.
Eeeew thanks so much I don’t think I’ll look at the nearby sub shops sweet sauce the same again… ick ick ick
Possibly, but(t) I don’t think it was Ned Beatty’s arteries that were making him squeal.
I agree, poontain is wonderful. Nothing else compares.
Tonight I had some mofoken wibs (bbq ribs). Yummeroo!!!
Well then, now you know how I feel about a good soft taco.

Yumm! Unfortunately they do not have In n Out Burgers in Oregon… Yet. I am crossing my fingers though
Right now:
Breakfast:
Sausage and cheese croisant at either Carl’s Junior or Burger King
Lunch:
Would have to be Carl’s Junior or A&W. OMG I love Onion rings!
Hmm, a tossup between Taco Bell chili cheese fries and donairs
I still frickin’ want poutine! And I’ve had dinner!
It’s bad when a five-hour drive sounds reasonable just to get a certain type of food.
As I’ve mentioned before, a close contender is Italian poutine- meat spaghetti sauce and mozzerella on fries. Really good fries. Damn, it’s a good thing I don’t drive.
I’m content with any of a variety of things from Sheetz. Their meatball sandwiches are better than any I’ve been able to make. A lot of their other sandwiches (hot / cold) are great, too.
And nachos. Made to order fatty goodness.
A late update: I was downtown today, and ran across a corner hot-dog stand that serves jalapeno-and-cheese smokies on a bun. Grill it good and black, add some half-done fried onion (still crunchy!), and drown it in hot sauce. Depending on my mood, that might beat the samosas I mentioned above.
Krispy Kreme Donuts!!!
