This. What is Maryland’s legal line for elder neglect? Is the doc aware of the extent of his falling? His aggression toward his wife? His delusions?
Awwwwww, nellie, the doggy was leaving you a present to remember him (her?) by.
As far as being close to swampy, we’re ~6.5 hours apart according to Googlemaps. Slothage was what I was referencing. ![]()
swampy, metal mouse and I only live about 1.5 hours apart, so we’ve met when he’s come up this way.
Up, caffeinating, breakfasted and fixing to purtify to take the grey ghost in for her oil change. I’m thinking that Saturday and Monday will be my days of sloth / day drinkin’. ![]()
Yesterday, it was 22F when I got up. Today, it was 53F. Am I alone in thinking that this may lead to tornados? (we’ve had winter tornados in these parts).
Stay safe and healthy y’all!
We know that. MIL refuses to accept it, and unless she’s declared incompetent, there’s nothing we can do to override her decision. I’m researching home health assistance - next stop is the county’s office on aging. But unless she gives up her pigheaded approach, there’s nothing we can do.
The doctors know it all. They say he needs to be in a facility. She refuses. FCD doesn’t want to make things worse between him and his mother or destroy their relationship. There’s no easy answer here. But reporting her to the authorities isn’t an option. She’s not actively abusing him - she just refuses to accept that she can’t do it herself. Her choices are based on what she believes is best for him, wrong tho she be.
I sent off a request for BIL’s shot record - we’ll see how that goes. Guess I should get in the shower now - I’m starting to offend myself. ![]()
I get this, but elder neglect is a different set of parameters than elder abuse.
For some reason, I’m feeling neurotic about some (admittedly overdue) deep cleaning around here before the new year. Kitchen seems to be today’s focus (also gotta vacuum the living room and bedroom). On the plus side, discovered that the stove is a lot easier to pull out to clean behind/under than I’d thought. On the minus side, unbelievable how icky the sides had gotten, and I’m not even into the oven yet.
Did manage to figure out reassembling the oven door without having to plead for help from maintenance (took off the handle thinking that would get me better access to a very hard to clean spot between it and the actual door, whole door decided to disassemble). Bonus points for no, the door cannot be taken off the appliance as a unit to make cleaning the oven a little easier for a user who does not have basketball-player length arms.
At least Buddy isn’t yelling at me to turn off the rain so he can go roam outside, he’s settled down to indoor life today.
I’m starting to wonder if FCD may have to go the route of at least getting official investigation of his mother’s competence. At the rate things are going, someone’s going to be seriously injured or dead before she’ll face reality.
Got almost the whole kitchen at least improved. Going to have to pend the top and sides of the fridge until DH is home to help me wrangle the appliance out of its niche. I also do not like tasks that involve climbing if I’m home by myself.
Taking a breather before I tackle cleaning the kitchen floor.
Good morning, Dopers! I’m up at what is an ungodly early hour for me (was out of bed around 9 a.m. WTF) but then, I was in bed at the insanely-early-for-my-current-schedule time of around 11 p.m. or so. And that’s all after a post-fun-times nap!
Apparently, I was one tired little shoe.
Stuff is still a-drippin’ and a-thawin’ out there, plus the oracles predict rain, so more drippiness will ensue.
I too, am curious about Sari’s housemate The Bat, and hope to hear more about it - I love bats - almost as much as I hope the antibiotics & antifungal meds help.
Can just the local area be shaved? I mean, it doesn’t have to be a whole-body thing, does it?
Here’s super mundane for ya: a co-worker with whom I’m friendly needs a lift to run an errand before work. (He is carless, and simply walks the 30-min or so to work from home.) Anyway, I was hoping to time it so we run Le Errande right before our shift started & then head on in together … but wouldn’t you know it, he starts one hour before me, leaving me with a weird awkward window. I could sit at work an hour early - ew - or drive back home then come back.
I guess I could sit in a back booth & finish this one damn cross-stitch. That would be the smartest, most responsible choice.
Well, until I decide, I guess I have a quiet morning. Got enough cleanup done yesterday that I don’t feel too motivated to do much more, though there’s perennially more to put away, wash, etc.
Ya know what? I think I’m gonna toss these two humidifiers. Was gonna mess around with trying to fix, but realized that at something like ten bucks apiece (they’re “compact” and from the bargain shelf off Wal-Mart) it ain’t worth the time & hassle and I guess I got what I paid for.
Tossing them into the bin counts as accomplishing something, right?
I’d say getting something useless out of your home to make room for the useful or enjoyable counts. ![]()
This is where you guys can put your collective foots down and say no, can’t live here either. Stop being nice dammit! Because once brother leaves rehab, and he will, they will want him living with you as well.
IMO that’s selfish on Moms part, upending your lives, possibly cutting it short as well due to stress and extra physical work tending elders.
If I were you I’d move onto that boat and sail away.

Sadly, I do not disagree.
FCM you know this I’m sure, but they absolutely canNOT move in with you. What if FIL takes a tumble down the basement stairs? Or hurts Tobias, or Roxy?
I’m sorry MIL is being so pigheaded, but this situation as it stands is untenable.
Someone smarter & more experienced than I would have to be the one to offer concrete advice, or someone at the hospital or elder care will have to firmly step in.
Holy socks, Batman, my Chewy order arrived this morning already!
… well, half of it. The gooshy-food is on its way, along with the battery-powered mousie. (The suet wound up on a separate order, so I knew that was shipping separately.) But we still have some gooshy-food & what Monkey doesn’t know about imminent toys won’t hurt him.
Plus the litter & kibble that did arrive (the important stuff!) came packaged in a big box with all sorts of interesting crumpled paper, so technically, he got new playthings today anyway.
When I get a birthday reminder in FB, I try to post a greeting to that person, as I did today. Then I got a message from a stranger informing me that my friend had died earlier this year. Rather embarrassing, to say the least.
Obviously Mike and I weren’t close buddies. We knew each other from work in the late 90s, and we’d met socially maybe 2 or 3 times before I returned to FL in 2000. Apart from an occasional message on FB, we didn’t renew contact after we moved to MD, and he was never a prolific FB poster anyway. I was able to delete my post from his feed.
Moral of the story - skim recent posts before putting up a happy birthday greeting. Especially when most of your friends are fellow geezers.
RIP Mike - sorry I didn’t know.
Had a brilliant idea! Since Monkey can’t get his catnip fix out on the driveway, due to snow/slush … and I’ve got this big ol’ honkin’ box from HIS food & litter anyway … yup, sprinkled some ‘nip inside the big ol’ honkin’ box.
He is presently losing his furry little mind.
Yeeeesh, I’m sorry. (“No good deed goes unpunished.”)
Well, got all the hard floors mopped, but vacuuming carpeted rooms is probably going to have to move to tomorrow, according to my back. At least there’s some progress.
DH and I are probably going to have a bit of a disagreement over the litter-catcher mat. He wants it in there, I’m getting tired of cleaning it when somecat pees on it (and I scoop their box AT LEAST every other day).
It’s good to do the hard floors first. Then the easy floors are a snap.
That sounds a lot like some wisecrack DH might make. You two might like each other (and Mrs. LA and I could duck out while you two are hassling each other (grin)).
Better heaving today. There was a “Dairyland” calendar in the fallout today. You can tell I am from Wisconsin, I was disappointed that it was just featuring Dairyland Insurance Company’s products and services instead of pinups of cows.

There’s no way you can take care of 3 people and babysit 2 toddlers. You and FCD will drop before FiL.
What? I only paid like 40 cents for a box last time.
[Southern Lady]Bless your heart[/Southern Lady]
Well, I’m back.
Left the hotel around 4am (!!), gassed up car and hit the road. Back home about 8:30am, could have been earlier but there was a traffic accident on I-24 that backed things up for a half-hour. Immediately fell into bed, pulled the comforter over me, and slept for 2 hours. Now I am ready to face the rest of the day.
FCM, I’ve got nothing…well, I have hugs and sympathy in plenty…but no advice. My dad was alone and knew, on some base level, that he couldn’t live on his own anymore, but was never happy in a facility…old age really sucks, as I think you have mentioned.
susie, I feel very positive about the negative (hope that came out right…).
shoe, glad you and G.C. are relaxed (see old MASH episode…).
Sari, don’t know dogs well enough to say if a bad-smelling wound is good or bad, think seeing the vet is a good idea.
Taters, best wished to Polar, hope the vet’s visit was worth the money.
Me too!!
nellie, glad you’re home safe and sound (and slightly heavier). Like swampy, not sure about the desert, but it sounds like something I’d try.
Thanks for the reminder, after 1,700 miles this week, mine is probably due.
Alrighty then, Pepsi and Ham-n-Cheese are resting comfortably in my belly and I’m alert enough to type all this, so onward into the day. All y’all take care.
I just made 2 wall hangings, ran the CNC for an hour, a little sanding, a coat of stain, and now they await some finish, but that’s a task for tomorrow. (He tells himself, so he can skive off work and go home. Yeah, the stain need to dry.)
A chunck of the fence that my dad and I put up some 35 years ago went down in the big storm right before christmas, so I brought it back with me. I think i’d be cool to make something artsy out of it. But I don’t quite know what yet…
metalmouse Glad the trip was relatively quiet and you’re home safe.
sari I agree with the mouse that getting a smelly doggie wound looked at is a good idea.
Today is my post-op eye appointment, so I should get some walking in. I have to unload the dishwasher and should do a load of laundry in here somewhere.
FCM, please don’t assume there’s nothing you can do about the situation. At first I, too, thought a competency hearing was the only option, but it turned out it only took a POA, which, thank heavens, my sister had. Your case is different, as MIL may have some dementia but I gather is still pretty much competent. This is why–and I know I sound like a broken record–you need to consult an eldercare attorney. They know the ins and outs better than you or I ever could and have dealt with your situation before.
I feel for both you and FCD, club-sandwiched as you are between three generations and helping all of them. You deserve medals. Unfortunately, medals don’t do any practical good. I’m sorry about your FB friend.
Metalmouse, glad you got home safe and sound and had a restorative nap.
VanGo, what a cool idea to make something out of the chunk o’ fence! I hope we get to see photos of whatever your creative mind and clever hands make.
sari, I hope Ripple’s wound has an easy fix.
doggio, try as I might, I can’t quite imagine cows in pinup poses. And I’m utterly stumped on where a bikini would actually go on a cow.
