Good mornin’ from smokey south Jawja! The smoke cleared up yesterday but is back today. It smells awful! Since a lot of the smoke is from the wildfires in and around the Okefenokee Swamp we’ve decided the smell is burnt up gator. Hey, if we gotta smell it, we might as well entertain ourselves with it, right?
I’m up and all caffienated as well. And ever so slightly hungover, so, NO YELLING ok?
I have chicken boobs smokin’ on the smoker, as if I needed more smoke, I know. When they’re done I’ve got some chicken laigs I’m gonna smoke. I need to go purtify and head over to church. Somebody is still abed nursin’ a worse hangover (HEE!) than mine so is not goin’ today. That’s jake cause he can keep an eye on the smoker. It usually takes about four hours to smoke big boobs like the ones I’ve got smokin’ so I’ll be home before they’re done. Still, I feel better if someone’s around whilst it’s doin’ its thing cause, even if it does say it’s ok to leave it to do its thing whilst one runs around, I don’t like stuff bein’ on if no one’s around and smoker is electric.
Later Y’all!
Morning, all. I’m up and caffeinating in a very quiet house – Alice is still asleep and apparently Papa Tigs and the Idiots are off at the beach. I expect to be joined by two damp and happy Idiots shortly. And Papa Tigs. (Hey, I said two Idiots!)
I’m not sure I’d classify Papa Tigs’ day yesterday as entirely fun, gt – whenever we’ve lived in the DC area, he feels duty-bound to go visit all his buddies on the Wall on Memorial Day, plus several other times a year. He lost half his basic training class (Air Force, no less!) in Vietnam, so he’s got 26 buddies plus his cousin on the Wall. They turned his entire class into either medics or security, both of which were pretty dangerous jobs – security would patrol the perimeters outside where all the Army grunts were camped, and too many medics went up and down from choppers rescuing wounded. He managed to get assigned to a hospital in Sacramento and only went to Vietnam once a month, mostly to bring home a plane full of dead bodies. Yeah, like I said, not exactly a fun time. Although he had enough hair-raising experiences in country that he’s still got a bit of PTSD that triggers very unexpectedly indeed. So visiting with the guys down there is nice, but paying his respects at the Wall isn’t a lot of fun. He usually cries. That’s why I let him go without me, because he doesn’t like me seeing him cry.

Anyway, enough downers for this morning. It’s a lovely day here, should be hot, and we just kept the AC on all night since it never got below about 70 out and the house takes a lot longer to cool down than to heat up. So I expect I’ll do something constructive today, but right now I don’t know what it is. Everybody have a good day!
I’m up, I’ve had some water, and I haven’t thrown it up. I’m waiting in cautious hope- there’s an hour and a half until work, and if I don’t throw up I don’t have to go through the puke-get-dizzy-lie-down-cautiously-drink-water-puke-again cycle.
Anyway, I think I might be okay. I hope.
My co-workers know I’m going to hide at the back regardless, so it should be okay, even if I feel awful- but I hope I don’t.
Up, caffeinating, had my Shredded Wheats and got to head to Lowe’s for the blinds to go in the bedroom window. Then, clean windows, and get started on these curtains.
Yesterday turned into your typical Party on Our Block, meaning that it went late, many beerverages were consumed and we’re all rubbing our eyes this morning.
I think today will be a night off.
I decided to take some pics of the stuff I did in class this semester. I’m missing one dish - FCD took it to hold his change on his dresser, and it’s lost somewhere in the remaining disarray. I’ll have to add it later.
I didn’t like the way the clear glaze came out on the planter and the slump mold dish, and my dog is unglazed right now. But this is what “A” work looks like - you too can be a ceramicist!! Lucky for me, I didn’t just get graded on artistic merit. I had perfect attendance, good class participation, and I aced both exams. I know I’m not an artist - more of a crafter. There’s a difference. Really…

Anyway, check 'em out!
What’s that you say, swampy? No yelling?
FCM, your set of mugs are kinda creepy yet adorable.
I was soooooooo unproductive yesterday - I was way too tired to do anything useful. Scottish Darling and I had tea and sang songs while she played the guitar. It’s appalling how little time we have left - she’s going back to Britain after graduation.
Right. I’m gonna do laundry, eat breakfast, then haul ass over to the library.
Good morning everyone. I’m up for the final time and caffeinating.
I’ve got pork in the slow cooker so I can make pulled pork sanniches for dinner.
The weather isn’t so nice today, so it’s a good thing we were on the boat yesterday.
Nice stuff, FCM. My daughter is taking a ceramics class at school. She’s only brought home one project, but we’re waiting to see the rest.
Other than some basic running around, picking up the house, and heading to our neighbor’s house for the party, we don’t have any big plans.
I’m hoping tomorrow is a nice, relaxing day.
I got some bad news from a friend and co-worker yesterday. It seems someone broke into her house Thursday while she was at work and the kids were at school. While waiting for the police to arrive outside, the younger boy got stuck in a tree, so the older boy went to help him. The older boy ended up falling and breaking his wrist. I feel badly for my friend. Her husband is in Iraq, so she’s dealing with this crap alone. They lost (at last count) about $13,000 worth of stuff. The sad thing is, they have a suspicioun of who it was. It was a friend of the kids’.
Mr. Taters has a very red neck. I guess one could call him a red neck. Hee. The rest of his sunburn is hilarious. You see, it’s not solid. He’s got funny white patches everywhere. I took one look at him this morning and just busted a gut laughing. I couldn’t help it.
That’s some purty stuff there FCM!
Taters I’m sorry about your friend. So, an work on whether it was a friend of her boys for sure?
It’s still smokey here today. GRRRRRRR… However the chicken boobs and laigs are smoked to smokey perfection. Can’t wait to eat 'em! YUM!
How’s your head, Swampy?
It’s been a properly grubby day over here, raining and cold and generally nasty. Not the kind of day you want to jump into your car and spend 1.5hrs on the motorways going to visit your doting parent. Oh no. So what did I do today?
Why is it that when the rain’s sheeting down and there’s a good wind behind it, drivers seem to think doing 100mph down the outside lane of the M6 (pretty much the UK’s busiest motorway) with *no lights) on in poor visibility is a good idea? I’m surprised there weren’t more than the four accidents I drove past on the way home.
My day at mum’s was ok, she had the usual list of things she wanted done so being the Dutiful Daughter, I did them all. I’m home now, she’s happy and the fuzzbutts were pleased to see me because ‘im indoors never thinks to feed them when he’s playing World of Soddin’ Warcraft. Will some kind soul please kill off Stumpovsky for good?
I have planted the suggestion in his little head that as it’s a public holiday tomorrow and therefore no work, we should go to the pub. It might be wet and horrible out there but five minutes’ walking will take us to the welcoming warmth of the Newhampton. Beerverages. What could be better?
On the plus side, six months from today I’ll be in Vegas!
Purty stuff, FCM! It sounds like you’re really having fun with your pottery. Which is the whole point of hobbies, isn’t it, even expensive ones? And congrats on your A!
I don’t know why people insist on going too fast in bad weather, either, BooFae, but they certainly do. Of course, around here they do it in good weather, too – yesterday on Route 50, a 3-lanes-in-each-direction freeway between DC and Annapolis, with very heavy traffic all moving a steady 75, a group of crotch rocketeers came through at probably close to 100 (mph, not kpg), slaloming between lanes – followed immediately by an even bigger idiot in a Volkwagen Jetta also white-lining it! I just hope a cop caught them before they killed themselves or (more likely) someone else because, man, that was sure a multi-vehicle accident waiting to happen.
I’ve been puttering at working this afternoon – more puttering than working, I’m afraid. I’m seriously contemplating a nap right now, too. I haven’t come up with a good reason not to take one, but I’m not so tired that I don’t think I’ll make it to bedtime if I don’t. Decisions, decisions. To nap or not to nap? 'Tis the question. I guess I’ll knit and think about it some more; I’m nearly finished with a sample scarf, and can probably finish it up in half an hour. And by then it’ll be too late to nap.
Don’t you love my pointless stream-of-consciousness ramblings today?
After several days of work, the nandinas have been uprooted from a 4 x 10 foot section of the side yard. A raised bed will go there for gardening, as it is one of the few spots in the yard that gets any real sun. My poor hands are killing me from shoveling and whacking and chopping, but the hard work is over. I’ll work some more on cross-stitch to finish out the evening.
Congrats on the “A”, FCM. I really like that planter.
I’m about to get lynched in Mafia III, so I’ll have more time to play in here!
I wasn’t going for creepy - I was trying for over-caffeinated, hence the big eyes and lots o’teeth. If I was more artistic, I may have achieved that, but like I said, I ain’t artistical.
Just finished claying and emptying the dishwasher. I trimmed a bunch of stuff, decorated 3 cat bodies, made 4 cat heads, and converted a prospective cat head into a teeny little vase, because it dried out too much to be worked properly. Tomorrow, I’ll be finishing up Isaac’s bowl and building Rusty’s, plus I’ll make the 5th cat head, and maybe another bunny jar. I’m going to put everything into a glaze firing instead of doing 2 firings. It’ll save me a lot of time, and as far as I can tell, there’s really no reason to always do a bisque firing.
**FCD ** informed me that I may take him out to dinner - oh MAY I??? So I guess I need to get out of my grubby shorts and tank top and don something a bit more proper for public view. Wonder where I’m allowed to take him to eat??
**SCL ** - I think the planter is my favorite of everything I made in class. It’s going to live on the front porch.
hi
bedroom a/c ont working so good - feeling sluggish from the heat. Gonna grab some ice pack and lay down.
bye
Well, over-caffienated people can be quite creepy, from my experience. Or maybe that’s just grad students in general.

rosie, sucks that the a/c is being uncooperative. Hope the ice pack helps.
Stuck in the library trying to crank out a 15 page paper. Gah.
I was playing with my camera today, so here are a couple of pics of me and Skunk . I think they came out ok.
I got an email from a dating site that I forgot I had a profile on, so that’s why I was playing with the camera. I was surprised to discover that I actually didn’t break the camera. I was always embarrassed about my broken front tooth (the one my father kicked out when I was 6), so I never smiled for the camera. And then I got Bell’s palsy, which is very obvious in photographs. So I still hate having my picture taken. But these didn’t turn out half bad.
Sounds like a t-storm getting ready to come through here, so this may be quick indeed!
FCM, all you stuff looks great and congrats on the A!! I love your planter too, btw. What did happen to the dog’s ear? And did you find out why the tiles on your tile project exploded?
Swampy, so sorry that you’ve got all that yucky smoke down there, but glad to hear that the pool party/BBQ went so well yesterday and you’re eating good tonight too.
GT, I didn’t have much luck with plants yesterday at Home Depot - most of what they had was full sun loving. I’ve got several other places to check for plants, though, and will get my herbs from one of the local Farmer’s Markets. So the next several weekends will be covered for my potting. What I potted this morning were white/pink tinged, violet purple and orange impatiens and one very beautiful begonia that is white with a pink tinge. That’s in a pot by itself right now, but I’m gonna see if I can get some more begonias so may transplant it again in a few weeks. I got some gardening gloves and was a bit peeved that they cost nearly $5, but now I’m glad that I got them because they’re really great! They’re cotton, but the outside of the hands is rubberized and it was great for digging in the dirt and moving dirt around w/o getting dirt under my fingernails.

Hope everyone enjoys their Memorial Day tomorrow. Since the patio potting went so well, I think I’ll take my house plants out there tomorrow and re-pot and trim them. We’ll see.
Extremely cool stuff, FCM. I really like the mugs - they do look overcaffeinated. But, yeah, the planter is very cool. And congrats on the A - I think I forgot to say that earlier.
Sorry about your friend, Taters. That really sucks. And to have it maybe be a friend who knew their situation (and obviously didn’t care) makes it only that much works.
**So, how’s that hangover, swampy???
Hope you made it to work without the puking/dizzy routine, LiLi.
It’s kinda smoky here today, but that’s because the neighbors are apparently barbecuing. How thoughtful. I’m hoping it’s the neighbors in back and not one of the new neighbors, cuz it’s really smelly. (The nighbors in back only grill a few times a year.)
Yeah, I guess it wasn’t really fun for PapaTigs. I was just thinking the other day about how much like Vietnam Iraq is starting to feel. I can almost hear Walter Cronkite giving the rundown of dead and missing at the end of each newscast. (There was something on NPR the other day that really triggered that feeling.)
It’s finally looking like it’s going to rain. I went out east to buy some plants with a friend this afternoon and we drove through a downpour, but that completely missed my house. Judging by the weather map, it’ll be really hard for the next bunch of rain to miss me. It also looks like I’ll have most of tomorrow to work in the garden and generally get outdoor stuff done. So hopefully I’ll finish off the weekend with a more or less planted and mulched garden.
Guess I should ponder what I need to accomplish tonight. I have laundry to put a way, a bunch to wash, paper to shred, and general recycling to get ready to put out on the curb before Tuesday a.m. Oh, and I should eat dinner, right?
Off to be productive.

When I was transporting everything home, I had wrapped most of the pieces in bubble wrap, but I ran out, so I set the head in my fleece hat and set it in the footed dish. Unfortunately, one section of Rt 5 south is in need of resurfacing, and apparently the head bounced and jostled in just the wrong way. Oh well…
  Oh well…
As for the exploded tiles, it was either that those tiles were too thick and not completely dry when the kiln got over 212 deg, or there were small air pockets in them that expanded and caused the tiles to go boom. Oh well - I wasn’t all excited about that project anyway.
The tile assignment was to get 5 pictures of nature and 5 of civilization. So I had a whirlpool, some sand, a tree, a flower, and water, plus Seattle, an aqueduct, Pompei, a barn, and a dock. We had to make a collage and transfer it to the clay. So my barn and the sand exploded, and the barn took out a little bit of the tree. I’ll use the techniques I learned to do another tile work some day. Maybe. But I really need a slab roller. The rolling pin just don’t do it.
Regarding dinner, we went to Outback because it was reasonably close and **FCD ** wanted a hunk of cow. It was good. I’m stuffed. We’re in the bum mode for the rest of the night. No Sopranos till next week. Oh well…
