Here comes lockdown again, but not in the MMP!

Update: Bulimic Supermodel Cat just hornked up breakfast on the kitchen table.

Afternoon, mumpers!

hippie good to see that you survived surgery and are on the road to recovery. Hope you make it home soon too.

sari I have been thinking of replacing our bathroom suite for some time but your trauma has officially put me right off! Mum looked at the options for a walk-in bath when she moved into her flat but eventually decided that she would remove the tub altogether and have a larger shower that had room for a seat in it. As it was a council-owned flat in sheltered housing, she had to get official permission for the work (they granted it without question) and she was always amused that the man who signed off on it was Mr Duckmanton. No real reason, just tickled her.

Evil Spaceman there are pretty much no rules here, apart from the fact that someone starts the MMP and the rest of us are duty-bound to hijack it. Oh, and don’t be shocked if anyone tells you that Swampy is gay

Back to irk…it is irksome!

Afternoon all.

The students I had today - that I’m actually expected to teach- were about as chaotic as expected; about three of the ten pay any attention, and half of them just act like 5-year-olds, throwing things at each other and whining when asked to do anything. Some of them are 18…

Glad the surgery went OK Hippie and happy firday all.

Morning all. Stayed in bed until almost 9am today and then spent time catching up with the election thread here in the Dope (never have turned on the talking heads, between the folks here and the NY Times map, I get all that I need). Have a soccer game to coach at 5pm but outside of that nothing much on the schedule. 71F now at 11:00am, so another lovely day in North Ali-bama.

Hippy, glad things went well, hope the pain levels come down.

Nut, not sure in England, but a lot of Freshmen (18 year olds) in the USA are living away from home for the first time and…are a bit wild. Hang in there.

Evil Spaceman, since FCM has already given you the perfect Mumper name, you need to honor (or given your mention of ‘a cuppa’, maybe honour is better) that by sticking around for, oh, 8-10 years…

Wheelie, never understood the attraction of Golf (my brother plays it too). From what I’ve seen the game should be called “Ah, S***!” Enjoy the time in the weather.

swampy, enjoy conventioning. Sounds like fun (not).

Ok, need to be about…something. All y’all have a good Firday.

Coincidentally, our esteemed founder, the long-absent RueDeDay, started the MMP in 2001. I used to have the first one bookmarked, but somewhere along the line when I changed computers, I lost it, alas. I believe he was the one who started the whole nickname thing, too. The only rule about nicknamaes is that you can’t pick your own.

Time to move furniture - the delivery guys will be here soonish.

We had to do the county park this morning.
Hopefully the lock will be off the gate sometime today.
All they did was reseed the park and put down straw. They also put up one of those orange fences, again, to keep the dogs off the grass.
It won’t last a week.

BooFae I don’t know that you should let what I went through deter you. I think if I had gone with a company that specializes in walk-in tubs, it would have gone a lot more smoothly. However, it also would have cost 2-3x more. The lfb guy had never done a walk-in tub before and he had no idea how much more irk it is. The plumbing doesn’t line up and he had to put in a new drain. He told me this has been a learning experience for him. It also didn’t help that his helper went out of town for a week, and then as soon as he got back he ended up in the ER with a high fever. Bad tonsils.
Also found out that the lfb guy had just gone through the rabies series. He has several feral cats on his property that he feeds. He went out to feed them one day and one of the cats attacked him. The cat was caught and tested positive for rabies. He said the shots are painful.
I always tell people, be careful with feral cats.
Of course, I’m still feeding the one out front. She hissed at me one day, but mostly she still runs away when she sees me.

Guess I’m going back to da jungle for pet food. I’ve been going to the local pet-valu where my friend irks, trying to support a local (nationwide) business. They start liquidating today, so one or two last trips and done. I may start going to Tractor Supply for the outdoor cat, the barn cat food is cheap there. Adam gets the good stuff, Antlers doesn’t. Especially since feeding outdoors includes feeding every other cat in the neighborhood, and possums too.

All of this lot are still living with parents, and most of the worst ones have been at the college a year already…

I may have accidentally flagged this thread - hope I didn’t…

Sofa and tables should be delivered within the hour. We’ve moved the loveseat and I’ve vacuumed, plus I steamed down the corner of the carpet that was under the love seat. So now we wait.

FCD’s car needs a lot done before it’ll pass inspection - like new tires and wiper blades - plus he’s having most fluids flushed and replaced so he can start from almost new. On one hand - CHOKE!!! On the other, a 7-y/o car with only 28K miles needs attention, and our car guy is good, so he’s going to do what needs to be done. Vehicle maintenance and safety isn’t a place to cheap-out.

Roxy is napping. We’re waiting…

I may die of election suspense. I was up waaaaay too late last night waiting for Biden to go over the top in GA, then woke up early this morning thinking I should go check the race. If my nerves had a personality, it’d be Barney Fife’s right about now.

I have a small request: could we please adopt a uniform spelling of longhair75’s nickname? “Hippy” is what I prefer, as “Hippie” has always looked odd to me, like it’s missing the “s” to make it plural. However, “hippie” is common usage, whereas “hippy” is merely an acceptable variant, so I propose “hippie.” All in favor?

Sorry if I’m being picky. Long years of teaching ruined me. Tune in next week for my stirring lecture, “Why I’ll Smack the Next Person on Social Media Who Comments ‘Awe’ Instead of ‘Aw.’”

If I can tear myself away from election results, I’m going to walk to the liquor store–Bourbon was the one alcoholic beverage I was low on, and this election stuff put a dent in what little there was–and the pharmacy, and the grocery store. If anyone drinks gin, rum, vodka, tequila, or liqueurs, or wine, help yourself. It’s mostly just sitting there.

Hippie, hope today is better. You’re missed around here!

FCM, we want photos of that luxe new couch soon! Tables, too. Good luck to FCD on the ceramic DYI.

Nut, how many of them are under 18? I get kids being worked up on Fridays, but throwing things? That’s over the top even for high school kids. Except freshmen. Nothing’s over the top for freshman.

The election thread is calling me. I mean, it’s been 5 minutes!

Yay Hippie. Hope you get to go home soon.

Mom, I’m not a car guy (any more) but you could post a pic of FCD’s new car too.

I’m gonna try this again:

That’s Vinnie. He’s 13, which we’re told is old for a Schnauzer. He’s pretty much deaf, and doesn’t seem to see real well any more, and he obviously has arthritis, but seems happy a lot of the time. We’re taking him to a new vet on Toosday, so we’ll see what she says.

Gotta go for a bit. Wifey wants her computer back.
[Orygun trumpanzee] I’m being oppressed!!![/OT}

The other table looks just like it. We are pleased.

You want to talk about election suspense? I’m in Pittsburgh in Allegheny County, PA. The world is waiting for us to finish counting!! :+1:

I haven’t met him in person (yet …) but I’ve heard that Swampy is indeed very lighthearted and carefree.

I have to leave after 8-10 years? :fearful: :cold_sweat: :disappointed_relieved:

May I ask for special dispensation based on age? I was taught traditional grammar through 6th grade, my school system switched to New Grammar for 7th on and my learning never recovered. They saw the error of their ways fairly soon but it was too late for me. I’ll try to remember aw/awe.

bumba Vinnie is adorable :skritches: and snuggles from afar.

Can’t you go over and help? Maybe bring 'em a calculator or something? Just kidding. I know they’re slammed and working hard; it’s just hard to wait, and I know harder for you than me.

No, no. That’s just when your first term is up. You’ll undoubtedly get reelected, but the vote count will be verrrry slow…2020 election slow. I understand bribes of chocolate and alcohol speed things up.

You mean you were TAUGHT to use “awe” for “aw”? That’s odd. I can’t find any indication that usage was ever correct. It would have been just as confusing: “Awe! Your baby’s cute!” would still have meant, “Amazement! Your baby’s cute!”

Sorry someone steered you wrong. I shall give them demerits forthwith and ban their attendance at the grammar rodeo.

FCM, beautiful couch, and I love the end tables!

Bumba, Vinnie’s a cutie. I hope the new vet can make him more comfortable.

nellie - we were especially pleased to see how well the lamp went with the table! Plus 3 drawers to stash stuff!! WOOHOO!!

Roxy has been claimed. We’re waiting for the auto shop to call about FCD’s car. I’ll drop him off, then head up the road to get our pizza for supper. Chillage shall ensue.

Howdy Y’all! Thought I’d get in a post before time to sup and then convention time. Not a whole lot has happened today. I did get into both hall closets and kinda sorta get 'em in order. I think I need to go on a get rid of stuff binge.

MOOOOOOM y’all will enjoy the recliner sofa. We have one and really like the way it reclines but still hugs the wall. It’s so comfy! Really like the tables and lamps.

Wifey has turned out to be a political junkie (who knew?). We stayed up 'til almost 1am 'cause she wanted to see Georgia switch over. I have family who live outside Atlanta and are ardent trump supporters. I’ve had to unfollow most of them to preserve my sanity. It would be nice if we could regain some level of civility in the future.

We’ve had CNN (her favorite so far) on the TV all day and she sits and cackles on the rare occasions they stop spewing opinions and actually update the numbers.
I’m more of a ‘results’ guy. I want then to tell me when they have some new numbers and shut up the rest of the time. It’s tiring.
I am much happier than I was 2 days ago, however.

I like your new sofa, Mom, and I particularly like your end tables.

Nellie, we’re giving him some glucosamine and chondroitin pills which seem to help.
Actually, we’re giving them to both pups (Gibbs seems to have a bad hip) with peanut butter (natch.)
I probably should start taking that stuff myself.

I should start to think about lunch. Obviously my stomach already has.

Nah, I wasn’t mis-taught about Aw and awe, but the conventions were abandoned and it was all loosey-goosey re: apostrophes, possessives, etc. If it felt good, do it. Broke my 6th language arts teacher’s heart, after 40 years of teaching, she retired rather than compromise, I didn’t blame her. I was in awe of her (she always let me stay in during recess and read, knowing my need to read was going to be my salvation (and it was). She taught some damn fine cursive too. That I still have.

Good, that would be the curriculum planners in Cedar Rapids, Iowa during the late ‘50s and early ‘60s. May they repent their evil ways at leisure. Might as well throw in the New Math cowboys too.

As long as you keep your sweetie.

Moooom Swell end tables. Love the drawers and the pull out tray. Movie night, here I come!

It’s been a hell of a week for me. First, last Sunday, my husband put down our 15 year old Peagle, Beanz. He couldn’t make it up the back steps, anymore. He had lost control of his bladder, was pretty much blind, and deaf.

Then, yesterday, my daughter, and I, took the Jeep to the dealership (This is important. We took it to THE DEALERSHIP.), to get an oil change, rotate the tires, and to have them check out the lights, as one of them was out. I don’t know what they’re called. It was one that was on the front side, up by the headlights, only they’re on the side. Anyway, the car guy (Who happens to be a mechanic, at the dealership, mind you!) came out, and told us that we were all done, and the bill was blah, blah, blah. I asked him about the light that was out.
He told us that there wasn’t any lights that were out. Those are reflectors.
No. They by Gawd are NOT reflectors! My daughter, who detests confrontation, was giving me those ‘Shut up, man!’ looks.
I kept at him.
He, one of the mechanics at the dealership, kept insisting that they were reflectors.
Ooooo. Well. That just totally set me off, and I sort of turned into a VERY bitchy customer. So, I kept at him some more, at which point, my daughter was desperately trying to find a rock/engine block/etc. to crawl under, because I’m ‘so, soooo embarrassing to her, when I don’t get my way’.
(Yeah. Let us NOT go there, today. I’m still bitter.)
He, the mechanic at the dealership, finally got his fill of my insistence, and handed me my key, and said, “Ok. I’ll show you. You start the vehicle, and turn on the lights. Then, I’ll show you that it’s just a reflector!”
I started it, and led him over, to the front, driver’s side, to the light that was out. He said, “You see all those little dots? Yeah, that’s a reflector.”
I said, “Well, what’s that small hole in the middle of it, then?!”
He said, “That’s just part of the reflector!”
Then, I led him around to the front passenger side, and showed him that that light (NOT a reflector!) was working just fine.
He then told me that he’ll be ordering me a new bulb for it.
I love it when I’m right, but, it irks the hell out of me, to have to be cunty about it, like I was. Good grief.
Shouldn’t a mechanic, at the dealership, KNOW more about freakin’ lights on a vehicle, than he did?!

Humbug!

Also, I’m not going to be able to relax, mentally, until Biden takes the Oath of Office.

FML.
