You know, while I don’t often agree with JC or JD, in this case, I don’t think she intended to do anything malicious. In fact, I had to read the GD thread a couple of times before I figured out why her post was even taken as tactless and hurtful, although I think I understand it now.
I do see that it’s hurtful to a MtF transsexual to let her know that you think she looks “mannish” in some way, if your honest opinion has not been solicited. But that’s less clear when the very topic of transsexuality is on the table, and the person has been discussing her gender identity without apparent embarrassment. Eve compared the comment to comments on someone’s weight, but let’s extend that a little. Suppose people were complaining about the inconveniences of being fat, and I chimed in to bitch about how my pants always wear out first in the inner thighs (true), and then someone said, “yeah, I’ve noticed that you’ve been getting a little chunky lately.” It would be tactless and insulting, but not nearly as much as if it wasn’t in the context of that conversation. I could easily see how someone could innocently make such a remark without thinking about how it would be insulting.
The real test, IMO, is the reaction when offense is actually taken. I wish that JD would at least make some response to Eve indicating that she didn’t mean to be offensive. But I can see being leery of that, too, when everyone is ready to jump down her throat again.
(And Eve, I’ve never met you in person, but I would never have guessed that you were transgendered based on your writing. Whatever bits you have now or used to have, you’re undeniably a lady).
