New Show: Lucifer

“I mean, look at her. Death and taxes are less of a sure thing.”

It’s weird; this is supposed to be about the Biblical devil on earth. But he and the show as a whole are so tame that it’s basically G-rated. Like at the beginning of the third episode this week, Lucifer is in bed with three girls when he’s woken up. He’s fully dressed, in a long-sleeve shirt and trousers, while the girls are in panties and bras. It’s like the tamest orgy in history. I realize this is on broadcast TV, but come on. At least suggest some form of depravity.

I don’t know, seems kinky to me.

Did you miss the episode before when he woke up to the Devils Trio?

Totally unrealistic, as everyone knows that the devil doesn’t roll that way.

To be fair, I always put my clothes back on after I have sex and before I fall asleep. Sleeping naked sounds cool until you realize that you might not wake up first and someone else might wake up to see your bare ass staring at them. What if you suddenly get attached in your sleep and have to fight naked like Viggo Mortensen? What if there’s a fire?

Clothes definitely back on after sex, thank you very much.

The thing that doesn’t work for me is that the devil is actually very non threatening in this version.

The devil should be legitimately scary on some level.

He occasionally gets scary, like when he pushed the agent through the glass wall. I assume from living on Earth these last ~5 years he has had to mellow out.

I’m still digging this show, last night’s episode was interesting enough. We have a sexually conflicted angel in the mix now. I don’t really like that they are taking Lucifer’s “powers” before we even know the extent of them. The plot could get really good or really bad now, it’s up to the writers to keep it interesting and hopefully somewhat logical.

Yeah, that was a great scene!

Mike Carey (yes, the same one) kind of did in his Felix Castor novels. Except Felix isn’t a cop.

I have to admit, I never thought of that.

Are they taking away his powers generally or is it something about the cop that affects him? Anyone else and the bullet bounces off of him but if it is her that shoots then he bleeds like any other mortal. It is consistent with how his power of persuasion doesn’t work with her.

I’m actually liking this “punish the wicked but otherwise be a fun loving hedonist” type. I think it is a nice change to show Satan as being not a bad guy unless you deserve it.

South Park is years ahead of them.

In the most recent episode, Chloe saw Lucifer’s reflection in a mirror and it seemed to disturb her slightly. But they only briefly showed the reflection, so what were we meant to see?

Lindsey was getting the full effect at that moment.

It was the same face he showed the record producer that he drove insane a couple episodes back. It’s not especially scary per se, kind of like a Star Wars Sith, but I guess it would be scary enough if somebody morphed into it in front of you. He also has a milder mode where just his eyes light up, that he showed to the little girl in the first episode.

I’m noticing some subtle filming effects to enhance Lucifer’s otherworldliness… the closeups show two pinlights reflected in his pupils. He always has that tempting smile, like you want to commit depravity, don’t you? There’s a filter effect to the background to make the rest of the world look blurry, as if Lucifer has an intoxicating aura.

Tom Ellis is really nailing this role. Maybe he’s not everybody’s idea of the lord of evil, but he certainly projects a casual arrogance and smarmy confidence. Even his lamest insults are funny because he sounds like such a naughty child. He’s not a barbaric sadistic psycho; he’s more of a high class libertine who rebels against authority figures and mocks their values. When he gets somebody to confess their desires, he’s like a cat who caught a mouse, toyed with it, then let it go. “I conquered you. Now I’m bored and you’re no longer worth my time.”

The angle where Chloe is immune to his charms and can somehow hurt him has gotten more intriguing. Before, he was about to shatter her notion of reality because of his superhuman feats. Now, she finds she can harm him and feels guilty about it. That’s how he’s going to get her to crack, by making himself her victim instead of her subjugator.

I was worried about him losing his powers but if, as has been suggested by several here in the thread, it’s only Chloe who can hurt him, I’m no longer worried. That would actually be pretty cool.
