Official "Lost" Questions Thread

Eh, he’s shot them as a hobby or was just taught how to use them safely by someone responsible. No big mystery, lots of Americans know how to shoot properly without being survivalists or ex-military or whatever.

Also, as for Charlie, he shot way too well for someone who doesn’t know how to shoot. Probably an oversight by the writers rather than indication of having some sort of training.

Why was Hurley on Korean TV? Does this have something to do with his being considered “something of a fighter” back home?

This is going back a bit, but I think we should add:

XX. Why did the ocean level suddenly rise and flood the beach they were living on?

They had a couple people specifically mention that it was not a normal tide. It’s definitely something weird.

I’ve been wondering why noone in these threads has mentioned the coincidence of this with the real-life tsunami. Since these ep.s were presumably written well in advance…spoooky.
My own contributions (asked, but not answered in the ep. thread).

Is there any significance to the expenditure of time, effort, and money involved in having Jin travel overseas to hand-deliver watches to his bosses’ buddies?

And one that surely someone here can answer easily;

What does the Chinese character on boones’ shirt mean? It looks like a caret over a plus sign over a wide oval with two vertical dividers.

I’m speculating that something was being smuggled in those watches. That’s the only reason I can think of.

Well, first of all we need to take care of some answers:

  1. What was Jin doing for Sun’s father?
Answer: He was sent to intimidate a government official into not closing down dad’s auto plant. Not understanding his orders to “deliver a message”, he failed and was sent with a thug who was going to kill the official. Jin beat the official to a bloody pulp, thus actually intimidating him and saving his life.

  2. How recent was the flashback we saw for Sawyer?
I probably should have removed this one. My bad. Anyway, the Answer is that Sawyers orriginal flashback was not neccessarily the recent path and was not directly related to his being on the plane.

  3. Does Jin speak English as well?
    Answer: No.

We have a possible partial answer to #34 (What is Sawyer’s real name (James)), but I don’t think we can consider it Officially ANswered yet.

I don’t think we need the second part. It could have anything to do with anything. But the first part goes in:

  1. Why was Hurley on Korean TV?

I could have sworn that we put one on there. Guess not. Good catch Smeg.

  1. Why did the ocean level suddenly rise and flood the beach they were living on?

I hadn’t thought about that but it does seem strange. Let me just do a quick rewrite to simplify it a bit:

  1. Why was Jin hand-delivering watches for Sun’s dad?

The tide question probably won’t be answered in the story, as the reason was simply because they wanted to get rid of the hassle of having the big fuselage on the set.

I believe I have figured this out:

It’s an expressionless minah bird that moves relentlessly to the tune of “Fingal’s Cave” by Mendelssohn and takes a hop every eighth beat.

Should we include a question about Locke’s Dad or leave that as standard plot/character development?

What do the numbers mean?

Is there actually a curse?

Is Hurley still cursed?

Will he pay Walt the money he owes (millions of dollars…) once they get back to the States?

He owes Walt $87,000.00, not quite in the millions.

Why was Hurly in a mental institution?

Was there something beyond Locke’s dad not being cool?

The way I look at it is this. If what is revealed about a character is something relatively normal, I’m not going to consider it a mystery unless the show makes a big deal out of it.

As an example, Kate was married, but lots of people get married. Nothing unusual here. We’ll probably find out that there is a connection to the man she killed, but being married by itself is no big deal.

Locke being in a foster home is more unusual. I wonder why he was there.

  1. WHy was Locke in a foster home?

Definitely about the numbers. I think I’ll combine the two on the curse.

Tha last one is a “What will happen?” question. Beyond our scope. We don’t even know if they’ll get back to the states.

  1. What do the numbers mean?

  2. Is Hurley (still) cursed?

There’s does seem to be an implication that he was committed, but they could be trying to fool us with that. Perhaps he only worked there. Perhaps he was only concerned with looking crazy after he became convinced of the curse. Let’s rework it as follows:

  1. How did Hurley know Lenny?

I’ll be back in a bit to add in our answers.

  1. What is the Black Rock mentioned in the French Transmission and presumably marked on Danielle’s map?

I do think this one was answered last night, or at least parially answered. It’s the broadcast tower that’s sending out the French Transmission (and before that, the Number Sequence Transmission).

  1. Why was Hurley on Korean TV?

Because he won a multimillion dollar lottery jackpot.

I’ll admit that they weren’t real specific with these, but I think those are reasonable unless someone can convince me otherwise.

Whether commited or not, he was definitely there long enough to form a relationship with Lenny and for the Doc to know him. So, a valid question, imho.

Sure. I just think that the phrase “in a mental institution” implies that he was commited to said institution. I figured he was in the building, so to speak. I’m just being all semantically nitpicky.

Who set up the original transmission?

Why did the wire end in the ground?

(as for Locke’s dad, Walt asked if his dad was a good man and he gave a cryptic “no!”)

Last issue first about Locke’s dad:
Oh yeah, I had forgotten that. Thanks. Right now I’m leaning towards this being a character bit, but it does have a certain cryptic element.

Oh, what the hell. Better to be inclusive. We can always remove it later.

  1. In what way is Locke’s dan not a good man?

I’m not real comfortable with that wording if anyone else wants to take a crack at it.

The first one goes on:

  1. Who set up the original transmission?

As for the wire, we’ve kind of assumed it was some kind of power cable because it ran into the ocean. If that’s the care, then going into the ground is just the path it takes to it’s destination. That may be wrong, but I’m content to let it stand for now.

Here’s one: if someone at a listening post in Australia (in the outside world) was able to pick up the numbers transmission coming from the island, why has no one picked up the distress message that’s been broadcasting from the exact same tower for 16 years??
