Official "Lost" Questions Thread

A little catching up here.

From watsonwil:

In light of the previous episode I’m reasonably satisfied that Sawyer was just looking for “points”. Plus it made for a nice character moment.

From Ethilrist:

But he’s not gonna tell us! Oh, all right. For the record, I think the speculation that he has the nickname because of his squeamishness is probably correct, but I’m betting there’s a specific story behind it.

As to the “Freckles” nickname, I kinda thought Kate looked a little freckled in certain scenes. Kinda like those people who freckle before they tan. Maybe that’s just me.

From Grace:

Sorry, but questions about what will happen and when are a little out of the scope of this thread. This is more a list of the mysteries that the show has raised in order to keep track of what we know vs. what has yet to be revealed.

So:
40)Was the psychic legitamate, and if so, what did he see in his vision?
41)Who the HELL is Ethan?
42)What does Ethan want with Claire and Charlie?
43)What is the significance of Claire’s baby?
44) How did Hugo get the nickname “Hurley”.

#1,2,3,15,20,and 26 All can be answered “The Island itself did it” The crash and survival independent of the island’s mystical influence are highly improbable- the writers even had the character with the most credibility at that point explictly state so. The Island clearly isn’t subject to the normal rules of reality- “magic” for the lack of a better term seems possible here. The Island itself may be “enchanted”. The large numbers of people who seem to have ended up there and the fact the rest of the world doesn’t know about the island (extremely improbable in this day and age) points out the Island’s mystical nature.

#35 can be answered with #41- they are the same person IMHO. Remember “Ethan” self reported his oh so fake name. I think long term exposure to the Island may not be too good for your mental stability. I think that’s what happened to the French party. The people that Daleen (B5 ref, sorry ) knew “died” on the island- but did they physically all die? That’s not clear at all. Her actions and fear seem to say maybe not (she wasn’t afraid of any monster). Unless a third party was also stranded there, “the Others” may be the transformed survivors of her party (at least Alex/Ethan seem to be).

#36 are two different questions- the Others may be the French party, a third stranded party on the island, or a combination. The whispers are the Island itself- certain inland areas seem heavier on the mojo action. That may be what causes people to go crazy over time and start collecting pregant women like Beenie Babies.

#37 the Island, or exposure to it (especially the more powerful areas) may have turned her party into something other then what they started as. On the outside they look the same, but the inside- different and certainly not better.

#25 and #26 are related. I think Locke is going native. He understands the mystical nature of the Island, understands what it did for him (see his comments), had nothing to go back to, and certainly seems quite content. I fingered him for the radio day smackdown- unless the Others did it. Locke got everything he wanted from the Island- and that bill will come due sooner or later.

If you have to put the phrase “I think” in your answer, then you don’t have your answer!

I agree with all of Trion’s editorial decisions thus far. “When will” questions could really bog us down.

Well, that just made my day.

elf6c, I did enjoy reading your speculation. Personally, I’m still looking for rational explanations for everything (I’m probably the only one left). However, even if we do find out that the island is magic, that would only be a partial answer. I’d still want to know how the magic works. Is it wish fulfillment? Cosmic Justice? A Purgatory-type test?

I agree. I have no problem accepting that the island is magic (although I would be fine with rational explanations, as well), but I am not a fan of “magic for magic’s sake.” Make it explicable, or find a different route.

Exactly. I don’t believe in psychic powers or magic or whatever in real life, but I don’t mind them in my fiction, as long as they’re handled with intelligence, creativity, and most importantly consistency. There has to be at least some general principle to what’s going on; otherwise it becomes a magic hat from which the writers can pull anything they want, which makes the stories remarkably less satisfying in short order.

I had another idea for how Ethan could have gotten onto the island–stowed away inside Jack’s dad’s coffin…

  1. What was the problem between Jack and his Dad?
ANSWER: Dad was “under the influence” durring surgery, resulting in a patient’s death. Jack revealed this to the hospital’s medical board, probably resulting in the loss of his father’s medical lisence.

New Questions:

  1. In what way is Hurley known as a warrior?
  2. What exactly did Boone and Locke find?

Quick Revision:

  1. What does Ethan want with Claire?

And apparently Jack has known about his father’s drinking problem for awhile, and so have others - that’s the reason for the nurse coming to get him during the botched surgery where the pregnant woman died.

Another possible question:

What is the nature and importance of Walt’s Luck?

I’ve been going back and forth about Walt’s luck. I like asking about it’s nature because it’s nature could be supernatural or purely psycological. I’m a little more iffy on the question of it’s importance - there may be no importance. It may all be head games by the writers.

Anyway for now:

  1. What is the nature of Walt’s “luck”?

I’ve only seen episodes 1-6 so far (and I’m having trouble finding .torrents to get up to speed on the rest…hint hint…).

Anyways, first question I had was why everyone was on the beach except for Jack and the dog?

I’d always assumed that people survive crashes by being snugly in their seats and getting extremely lucky.

Jack, however, would have had to fall out of the plane (didn’t he have his seat belt on?) into a forest of bamboo with only minimal injuries.

-Joe

Has Walt always been lucky or is it a manifestation of the island, like Locke’s ability to walk again?
If he’s always been lucky, did it possibly keep him safe when his mother was killed in the car accident? Was he with her, and his “other father” (whom we’ve just learned about - what was his name?) at the time of the accident?

His name was Brian. (A brain eater? )

And it was Brian who tod Walt, “You’re the luckiest [person/kid] I’ve ever seen.” Pre-Island.

My take on that was that blacked out, woke up, got out of the wreckage, staggered off into the bamboo and passed out again, then woke up with no memory of the past few minutes.

It’s at least as believable as surviving the plane wreck. Then again, so is surviving being thrown clear.

It’s also in keeping with one of the WAGs which is that this is all Jack’s hallucination.

Or the dog’s.

Since Jack could make his way back to the beach, there’s no reason others couldn’t do the same. If the middle part of the plane was on the beach, and the front of the plane was further in the woods, it’s not unlikely that some contents of the plane were spread out in between. I seem to recall him running past a shoe hanging from a tree there somewhere.

Although I suspect the real reason is that it made for a great looking scene, going from the serene waking amongst the bamboo to the chaotic and fiery crash site. Very cool.

I’m not sure what the board rules are regarding links to tvtorrents on the net but they’re not that hard to find. Hinty enough?

An Mother.

…and his suicide, which is the REAL problem that Jack is trying to deal with.

The question was in regards to his mother stating “after what you did to him” or something of the like.

Seems like this episode only raised a few questions. I think they have all been addressed.

  • Hurley’s Warrior Comment (he’s SUCH a mystery!)
  • Walt’s luck
  • THe metal thud heard by Locke and Boone

Do we want to add a question about the nature of Charlie’s resuscitation? I could go either way on that one.

What about whether Kate is American or Canadian?

What about whether Ethan actged alone in the abduction (there were several comments about this that made me think the island is helping…)?
