Maybe it did.
Was it the island/TCM that made Boone hallucinate, or was it the salve Locke applied?
(as I said in the episode thread geographic and magnetic north can differ a lot in the real world [21 degrees in Seattle] so I’m not sure what the writers were thinking here)
Brian
All caught up now. As for what happened: our 13 month old daughter took a tumble down the stairs to the basement. Not something that’s good for the heart, let me tell you. But she was checked out in the ER, complete with CAT scan, and she’s fine. Just a bump on the head and a bloody nose. She’s an Amazon.
Anyway:
Absolutely. But I’d like to reword it if you don’t mind.
- How come Locke’s compass no longer points north?
Maybe not as technically acurate, but I like the double meaning.
I’m not sure what you mean by “own”. Boone seems to be “free” now, and is probably on Locke’s “side”. But I don’t even know what the sides are or what. These ideas are still being developed in the show.
Creepy. But even if that’s the case, then it just means that the answer to question 4 (What is the big monster?) is “an hallucination”.
I’m also going to consider this part of question 4. I could concievably break down the monster into component questions like:
Why does it leave no trail?
Why does it crush the trees?
Why does it kill people?
But if we did that, we’d just be driving ourselves crazy.
Sure.
52) What caused Boone’s halucinations?
I’m going to add one of my own:
- Why was Sawyer getting arrested in Sydney?
Also:
46) What exactly did Boone and Locke find?
ANSWER: A hatch in the ground, sealed with cement that they can’t break into.
Thanks guys!
Feel free to reword as you like, so long as I get/share credit for the question.
Credit?? This is for the ages, man. This is for science. This is for culture! This is for … um … chicks! Hot Chicks! That’s why we do this. That’s why we do everything. To get the Hot Chicks!
But hey, if you’d rather have credit…
Funny, the chicks are the reason I chose Electrical Engineering as a career…
It sounded to me like they left a piece of the reasoning out of the dialogue. They’re presuming due to the tropical conditions that they’re close to the equator, which would make the true-north/magnetic-north deflection fairly small. However, if they’re not close to the equator, if they actually crashed on an island close to the pole, this would explain both the compass error and the presence of the big white bear, but it would make the climate the mystery. Hmmm.
Glad she’s ok!
“Hey! I thought this island would heal ALL of my body parts that no longer worked!”
A fair way to phrase this, if inclined to include it, would be "Were Locke and Boone fundamentally changed by their vision quests?
But that still raises the new questions,
“What’s inside that hatch/where does the door lead?”
“Who sealed it and why?”
Also:
- Does Jin speak English as well? (suggested in the weekly thread)
Actually, I was thinking of it like this:
“That’s just crazy old man Locke. His compass doesn’t exacltly point North, if you know what I mean” Best if accompanied by twirling your finger near your head.
Better, but still a little vague. Maybe something like “How were Boone and Locke changed by their vision quests?” This leaves open the possibility that the answer is “Not at all” or some other small change. How does that sound?
Yes and yes. There’s a temptation to lump #2 in with the questions about the “Others”, but this one is sufficiently different that I’m going for it.
Using the rule that if a character ask the question, we should be thinking about it, this one also goes in.
I’ve also just been reminded that this was episode 13. Time to look at those questions that have been posed that were probably unnecessary.
These are the candidates from my point of view. Feel free to suggest more:
13) Why was he traveling with three hundred knives?
I could go either way on this one. It seems like we could remove it, but it was mentioned by a character in show. What say you?
21) Was Sawyer refering to something specific with his line to Kate about his “birthday wish”?
I’m saying this one is out unless someone can defend it.
31) What happened to the rest of the flight crew? Are they all dead?
Nothing has been mentioned one way or the other about the flight crew in the show. Nobody on the island is worrying about it, so I’m not going to either. This one goes.
32) Did Sun tell Michael anything else of importance?
There’s also no hints that there’s anything to this one either, mostly just speculation on our part. I say this one goes too.

Perhaps a combination of #19 and #31 would be appropriate.
Basically, “Did anyone other than those accounted for, including Rose’s husband, survive the crash?” There is a better way to rephrase it, but that is the jist.
I still say that it makes sense that the scientifc team had rifles. If they knew they were going to an unexplored island, they wouldn’t know what kind of wild animals they would meet. It just seems a sensible precaution to me.
I posted a thread about the fact that on the Alias episode right after Lost this weekend, you could hear Driveshaft’s “You All Everybody” in the background on the radio. Did anyone else notice this? Where did that thread go?
It was an exaggeration when said… he wasn’t carrying 300 knives, he actually had more like 6 to 10. And it’s easily explained - he went to Australia to go on a trip to live off the land. Knives are handy for that.
Definitely answered.
By the tone, context, nature of their relationship, I thought it was totally obvious that he was just making one of his sarcastic, semi-flirty comments. There’s no history there, just a generic “hot woman jumped on top of me, I’ll make a joke” sort of thing.
Just knowing they had rifles, your explanation makes perfect sense. However, Sayid specifically asked why a scientific team would need rifles, and Russeau declined to answer. Because the character thought this was strange, that probably means the writer wants to make us think about it - therefore making it something worth wondering about.
My question is if anyone can send me tapes. I’ve only seen one episode.
Actually, that sounds real good to me. I think I’m just gonna use that for the new #19.
- Did anyone other than those accounted for, including Rose’s husband, survive the crash?
Sorry Odinoneeye, but as SenorBeef says, I think there’s more to the rifles than the obvious. It’s not a full question anyway, just part of one so I’m keeping it. Perhaps the answer will turn out to be obvious. Thats OK with me.
WordMan and andygirl - I’m sorry, I can answer neither of your questions. I think you’d probably have better luck in the threads for individual episodes.
This one may be considered superfluous at the moment, but it occurred to me last night. I was re-watching a bit of the first episode, and I noticed that for a great deal of it, Kate hesitates before she answers any questions put to her–including when Jack asks her for her name.
In her Australia flashbacks, she called herself “Annie.” The guy in the bank called her “Maggie.” Is “Kate” even her real name?
Good catch. I do remember wondering about her name durring the bank heist but had forgotten about “Annie”. Does anybody rmember Kate calling herself Kate in any of the flashbacks. If not, on the list it goes.
