Please welcome our newest SDMB moderator, Spice Weasel

I don’t think your moderation was heavy handed, Spice. The remark you modded seemed out of place and stupid to me.

I don’t understand your point, Melbourne. I know I’m dense sometimes but I’m not sure what bothered you in that thread.

I’d say it was a coin flip between a general reminder and a Mod Note. Not an easy call.

I agree, she did fine.
Did that count towards her weekly quota though?

I think Melborne was concerned about posts 5 and 6, in the thread. IMO. Tell me if I am wrong.

It’s funny, you think you know everything about the way the boards are run when you’ve been here 11 years, you think you know exactly what does and doesn’t warrant intervention, but the second you are the one who has to make that call, it becomes a lot more difficult. It’s a growth experience for sure.

Still happy to be here. I spend enough time here, and have poached so many friends from these boards, I figured I might as well make myself useful.

As for the jokes - I’m shooting for a more relaxed approach, so I’m not about to step into that as a Mod. Unless they somehow derail a thread, I suppose. If it becomes an issue, and doubt it will, we’ll see.

I don’t know how to feel about the jokes, personally. Don’t think I know how to respond to such comments. I’m choosing not to respond at this time. Certainly in that thread, responding would have derailed it further. We can all celebrate here, in this thread, instead of disrupting others.

I did my best to get the thread back on track as a poster.

The remark was stupid - that is certain. Until yesterday I would not have thought it particularly out of place, given it’s in MPSIMS. It’s too much work for me to even try to figure out how to not ruffle feathers.

I think I’ll just stick with lurking or posting in the BBQ pit - that forum is easy to figure out.

I suspect that being a Mod implies a certain amount of corralling your personal pet hobby horses. Whatever those may be.

Much of the complaining in ATMB about Mod actions seems to run along the lines of “Mod X stomped on me but not the person I was arguing with. They did that because they agree with his side, not mine. It’s not fair! Waaah!!”

I certainly can’t say that these various complaints have merit. But they’re common enough that there’s a perception out there that some mods do that often, and most do it at least occasionally. That’s probably not a reputation that helps them as posters. Or as Mods.

I used to work closely with the police. Although I wasn’t part of that organization. Even off duty many exude a police-ness. They can take off the uniform but their neighbors still treat them differently even at the PTA picnic. You’ve put on the star. Wear it lightly. But never jokingly; that can’t go well.

When I was a Union leader I used to teach my new volunteers that the perception of impropriety is often more harmful than actual impropriety. Actual facts are subject to actual evidence. Perceptions are much fuzzier things harder to control or refute.

Congrats! Well deserved.

Congrats I think.

I wish you good luck.

Big time. After years of experience as a poster, I’m used to posting a certain way, and I’m suddenly calling all of those defaults into question. There are no hard and fast rules and every mod handles it differently. I have to consider a lot of new dynamics I didn’t before. How would it be perceived if I’m arguing in a thread and then I have to mod that thread? I’m both fascinated by the whole thing and stressed as hell.

I think ultimately what it comes down to is personal integrity. People aren’t always going to be happy but if I can say at the end of the day, look, I really tried to do this right. I have to be content with knowing I did my level best to be fair. There are a lot of reasons I asked to do this (yes, asked) and they were pretty good, honorable reasons.

In all honesty this job is going to force me to HTFU. And I think that’s a good thing.

Congrats!

Maybe she’s part of the Bann-y Gesserit order now?

I’m embarrassed to admit I’ve never read Dune. I have to eventually, because giant sandworms.

Excellent choice. I know **Spice Weasel **will be a great moderator.

Bravo! Well played.

Spice: the Bene Gesserit play a role in *Dune *not far from the Jedi of Star Wars.

I never bothered, and just watched the 1984 movie instead. I remember all the Dune fans gushing over it because it was exactly like the book.

Were there giant sandworms in the movie? Asking for a friend.

Wouldn’t be Dune without giant sandworms.

A mod needs to establish authority. Speak clearly, like Marlon Brandon did in the Godfather.

Here, an example from one of your posts above. Speaking in a classic language, of course.

Your post;*In Star Wars Sith Language…
