After lurking for awhile, then joining a year ago, I’ve participated in many threads, but never actually started one until now. It’s my turn to kick things off of the MMP this week. Before we turn to our regularly scheduled discussions of weather (60 here tomorrow, rain maybe - finally! - Tuesday), I wanted to ask everyone about their first threads -intro threads don’t count!
How did you pop your cherry with the Dope? How did it go? Was it well received? Hotly debated? Did you swear you’d never come back, or were you instantly addicted?

IT’S A SNOWPOCALYPSE!!!
Depending on how the storm coming in from the Atlantic tracks, we’re gonna get between 20" and 30" of the cold wet white stuff between now and Wednesday morning!!!
The thread that hooked me, back in early 2006 was something along the lines of “things that make you feel old / today’s youth will never know about …”
This was the first MMP in which I posted, and this was my first MMP OP. The photo links don’t work any more. I’d long since reorganized my Photobucket files. When I’m at my desk later, I’ll find them and at least post the one for “Dinner With Dopers”.
Meanwhile, I’m awake because Nature called during a particularly weird dream, most of which has now faded, but the last scene was me talking to what I thought was a ghost haunting my apartment, but turned out to by an alien transmitting from a ship who didn’t understand that disembodied voices can be scary to humans.
There was also something about a friend given me a ride on his scooter (Vespa, not mobility) in San Francisco in the middle of a snowstorm, and neither of us had proper outerwear. I kept screaming at him “We should go back! The straws are frozen!”
I am now awake-ish, so I’ve got the daily Law & Order mini-thon on, then it’s Charmed, then maybe back to sleep to avoid the SNOWPOCALYPSE!!!

sunny thanks for startin’ us off. I don’t remember the first thread I started or the first MMP in which I posted. I’m sure my first MMP post was in one of our illustrious founder’s usual Monday moring posts, but that was waaaaaaaaay back. Sure, I could go search, but I’m not wantin’ to do that right now.
Ok, that’s all I got. I need more caffeine and to feed rumbly tummy. Then, alas and alack, irk purtification must commence. I get to sit in on a conference call first thing this mornin’ at irk. ICK!
I’m pretty sure thisis my first. I was miffed and I needed to vent. I’d been a member barely over a week. And please, don’t resurrect it - we’ve had enough zombie threads lately and far too many toilet threads in general.
No clue what my first MMP was, especially since you can’t search “MMP”… Once upon a time, I had the very first MMP bookmarked, but due to a change of computers somewhere along the way, that’s been lost. I do know that back then, **RueDeDay **was a stay-at-home dad with two preschool sons. Now he’s got one boy getting ready for college and another getting closer to getting his license. **Rue **has been working at a vet’s office for some years now, but he hasn’t been to the Dope in eons.
As for cherries, the b-day cake my sweetie brought me was chocolate with fudge frosting, topped with cherry pie filling. The last of it will be ingested today.
It’s raining, and it’s supposed to continue all day. Then tonight, it’ll transition to snow, and we could get up to 3". I don’t expect to be shoveling tomorrow - I think it’ll stay above freezing too long, plus snow falling into puddles = bigger puddles. We shall see.
I need to call our car guys about checking out our Sonata. **FCD **said the brakes feel spongy and I’m pretty sure we’ve never had any brake servicing done. Since we’re over 75K miles (in less than 3 years!!!) we’re probably due. That’s my main chore for today.
I’ve started making little crocheted baskets - maybe 3" in diameter. When I get a dozen done, I’m going to start crocheting little bunnies, and I’ll put 2 bunnies per basket with a little Easter grass. If they sell at $9 each, I’ll get $5 each. It’ll definitely cover the materials by a lot, but I’ll get less than $2/hr for my time. No matter, mostly I sell stuff at the store to pay for the materials to finance my hobbies. So it works. Between NCIS and Netflix, I’ll have plenty to keep my brain occupied while I crochet the day away.
Honestly can’t remember that far back as to what brought me to the Dope or the MMP. From my login information I started in 2006, about the time my first marriage was falling apart, so I guess the board became a human interaction substitute for those tough times.
Initially wouldn’t stray from General Questions, and even today I loathe anything like an argument (here on the website). I’ve had too much of that in real life to enjoy it online.
Rosie, a coworker (and friend) of mine starts a new job today - chief photog at Boston’s Fox affiliate. I was blowing up his phone text for hours yesterday. What a time to start.
Here in DC it shouldn’t be that bad, but since I have a satellite truck parked outside the house (the Annapolis 6 fatality ‘Castle’ mansion fire is just down the road from me), I am packing a bag to stay away from home for a few days, should the occasion arise.
tugig!!! Where ya been hiding, dude?? Were you covering the Castle fire? According to what I saw on the weather last night, you’re probably straddling the line between snow and rain, altho that same forecast had my little corner of paradise in the rain zone, but now they’re talking snow maybe. Have I mentioned how much I hate winter?
It’s light out, but gray and rainy. I should probably shower and don something other than fuzzy robe and slippers, being an adult and all.
Kinda wondering if I’ll hear back from the resume I submitted for the part time drafting gig. I’m kinda hoping I don’t. I don’t think I want to go to work, especially not across the Nice Bridge again. But I’ll just wait to see what they say, if anything. Heck, they might not like that I told them right up front how much I want to be paid. But no sense in doing all that interview nonsense if they’re looking for cheap help, right?
My first post, the one that made me register, was one about contact juggling, which I can’t be bothered to try and find now. I can’t remember my first MMP post, and I don’t think I’ve ever started one. I don’t start many threads.
I massively overslept today (woke up at about 8, then dozed back off and woke up at 12.30 :eek:) with a really stiff hurty back. My sleeping habits are weird and decidedly less than ideal
Oh well, the good thing is that I got woken at 8 by a text asking me to do some horsey leaflet delivery stuff tomorrow and Wednesday. It’ll only be a few hours and it’s really low wages (minimum wage, but I wind up paying high tax 'cos it’s a second job), but they’re lovely to work for, and even a few days work is great right now, yay!
I don’t remember my first thread, nor my first MMP posting…what do you expect? I’ve been here for a while and I’ve had a drink since then.
It’s roughly half a dozen UK degrees out there, looks cold and grim so I am not going out to investigate. I went to see my doting parent yesterday, she’s doing very well and is looking forward to getting her plaster cast at the beginning of February.
Busy week for me, got lots of boring stuff to do at irk and a few evening commitments going on too so I will be out and about for a change.

The rain has stopped. I really should head for the shower. For some reason, I have close to zero motivation this morning…
No new critters other than the occasional mouse. Had a burst pipe a few weeks ago and needed to go crawl in the crawlspace for awhile. I was glad to be alone in the endeavor.
Snow? Here in Annapolis it’s anywhere from trace to a few inches. My new favorite DC area winter weather page is the NWS Sterling Winter Weather Page, which updates constantly and has some really cool graphics. I imagine most other regions now sport a similar page; it was experimental here in DC last year.
I spent all last week at the Castle fire, most of it in the satellite truck. My work vehicle situation has been interesting - the video I shared a couple months ago of an accident caught on dashcam resulted in the at fault driver’s insurance company totaling my work truck (a 2003 Explorer isn’t worth much). So I have been in limbo ever since while the powers that be figure out a replacement.
Other than that drive by post in November, I honestly have not even lurked on the board since September, so it will be interesting to see what changes have occurred in the past few months.
Lessee, in the past few months, doggio, BBBobbio, and **spidey **have formed a boy band, **rosie **and **Spaz **have become their permanent grooupies, **flytrap **has joined a monastery, **swampy **has become a world-reknowned salsa dancer, and I got a haircut.

Understood. It’s snowing here, the sprog has a snow day, and I’ve got a two-hour delay, so I don’t have to be at work until 10:30. I hate snow.
Never started an MMP, only started hanging out with you [del] weirdos [/del] fine folks recently. I think the 1st thread I ever started was Tell Me About Your Experience With Family Estrangement or something along those lines (sorry, I’m on a phone on the bus, someone else can search/link) and it was enormously helpful and comforting to gain perspective and learn that I was not so alone.
Wasn’t the MMP idea started by Rue DeDay? I remember reading MMP threads but not posting because I didn’t think I was clever enough. The first SDMB thread that had me on the floor was “Do You Have a Prehensile Rectum?” by Billy Rubin.
Not much going on here. I have to return a mattress pad to Kohl’s after work. It crinkles and has the gross cotton ball feeling. It cost $100 so I’m getting my money back (even though I used it for 2 nights). I bought a cheap replacement and it’s just fine.
Hi all. Fun thread idea. My first was a thread about someone almost falling off the roof. The post that got me was someone expressing dismay that they thought the thread title meant someone died, but a mod had fixed the title by then. I finally delurked to ask what the original title had been!
