Take 5@Work-What’re The Most ‘Popular’ Threads You Started. Answers w/New VB Search.

Subtitled: A Nostalgic Romp Down Vanity Search Lane.

It’s Friday afternoon and after a long, strenuous week, things are winding down. i came up with a new way to eat up a little time before whistle blows.

While perusing MPSIMS earlier today, I opened spittingkitten’s ‘What’s the funniest thing you’ve ever seen/heard/done?’ thread. It was a good read & rather amusing. In it, someone linked a couple of old threads and was mildly scolded by another poster for a “propensity to blow (their) own horn.”

I guess there’s a pretty thin line between shameless self-promotion and acceptable board etiquette. I personally don’t consider pasting links to one’s one threads boorish - But then again, your mileage may vary. As I gave a little thought to what constitutes ‘horn-blowing’, I went to the improved V Bulletin advanced search function and discovered there’s an entirely new way of running searches:

You can now sort your search results in either ascending or descending:[ul]
[li]Number of Replies,[/li][li]Number of Views, or[/li][li]A whole host of other criteria such as: Relevancy, Title, etc.[/ul][/li]
That got me to thinking, if I
[li]Search by my own User Name[/li][li]Select: Find Threads Started By User (underneath the User Name)[/li][li]Choose to, Sort Results by: Number of Views / In: Descending Order[/li][li]And then, Show Results As: (*) Threads In All Open Forums
The server would return the ultimate vanity search. [/li]
Before I hit the ‘Search Now’ button, I realized I had no idea what threads would pop up on the list. The results taught me a little about my self and my posting habits. Some of the other things I discovered I’ll put in italics.

For starters,
=> I was surprised to learn I started 183 threads.
(That’s 14% of my post-count! I had no idea I started that many. If my boss knew that he’d have a stroke. I’m gonna lay off starting any new ones until that ratio is down under a more respectable 10%).

I scanned the 1st 25 threads on page 1 of the search. Once again, I was taken by surprise.
=> They ranged in number of views from 4,200 down to 750.
(I didn’t think any thread I ever posted in or started had more than 1,000 views)

=> They were spread across all forums (except GQ):
6 (IMHO), 2 (MPSIMS), 5 (Café Society), 4 (GD) & 8 (BBQ Pit). I would’ve guessed they were all going to be in Cafe Society.

=> Some of the threads I almost forgot about and enjoyed re-reading. Others I was totally embarrassed for even writing. I’m not going to post links to any of them, they’re ancient history.

Poll time: What I’d like to know from any of you who’d like to the search posts you created in descending number of views (preferably during off peak hours) is the following:[ul]
[li]What is your threads created : post count ratio?[/li][li] =>[/li][li]Are there any on the 1st page of results you were surprised to see?[/li][li] =>[/li][li]Were there any threads you thought for certain would have showed up in your top 25 and didn’t?[/li][li] =>[/li][li]Were there any you almost forgot about?[/li][li] =>[/li][li]Were there any you enjoyed rereading? If so, feel free to post a link (by right clicking the title, copying the shortcut and pasting it).[/li][li] =>[/li][li]Are the forums your results are in diverse, or are they limited to one or two?[/li][li] =>[/li][li]Did your curiosity get the best of you and you decided to rerun the search in ascending order? If so, what lemons came up in the search?[/li][li] =>[/li][/ul]

Wow. I have started some really, really lame-ass threads.

I started 120 threads exactly, which is almost 20% of my posting total, and that suprised me quite a bit.

What I really noticed is how much better my threads have done in the last year compared with those that I started when I was a newbie to the boards. Glad to see that I have learned a few things.

I was suprised to see that a few threads I had started and not payed much attention to the numbers of posts or views had gotten a lot more views than I would have suspected.

Me too. JohnBCKwld, thanks… I really learned a lot about myself as a poster from this little exercise. Namely, that I’m a douchebag when it comes to starting threads.

Shockingly enough, my most-viewed (2,889 views, 174(!) posts) thread was Is Nader going to screw up another election?, followed less surprisingly by I pit The_Broken_Column at 2,751 views, 70 posts.

I also got to bump some threads I really miss, so thanks again.

[li]What is your threads created : post count ratio?[/li][li] =>I’ve created 445 threads. I don’t remember my post count. The funny thing is, I just made a note of what it was the other day and promptly forgot. I do believe my thread starting percentage is way over 10%.[/li][li]Are there any on the 1st page of results you were surprised to see?[/li][li] =>I’m surprised to find that, reply-wise, 3 of the top 5 are Name That Tune threads in CS. [/li][li]Were there any threads you thought for certain would have showed up in your top 25 and didn’t?[/li][li] =>My threads just aren’t that memorable. Not to me, anyway.[/li][li]Were there any you almost forgot about?[/li][li] =>Well, once I saw the title I remembered them.[/li][li]Were there any you enjoyed rereading? If so, feel free to post a link (by right clicking the title, copying the shortcut and pasting it).[/li][li] =>The ones I enjoy rereading are all in the Pit. I guess I’m just mean and nasty. So are a lot of others. [/li][li]Are the forums your results are in diverse, or are they limited to one or two?[/li][li] =>By replies: Forums: CS–7; Pit–6; MPSIMS and GD-- 5; IMHO–2[/li]By view-- 13 out of the top 25 are Pit threads. I guess I’m not the only mean and nasty person around here.
[li]Did your curiosity get the best of you and you decided to rerun the search in ascending order? If so, what lemons came up in the search?[/li][li] =>Nah.[/li][/ul]

Well whaddaya know. I don’t monopolize the conversation as much as I thought.

P.S. My most views range from 2,012 to a whopping 12,636.

My three top threads I started were best liner from a movie-136 posts 3368views
best practical joke ever 64 posts 2533 views and most bizarre morning after story 25 posts 1602 views.

Well I feel like a wallflower. I have started 11 threads. Compare that to Moejuck with about the same number of posts. My views on those threads rank from about 100 to just over one thousand. I need to get more interesting … STAT!

Does that make me a wall mushroom?

What is your threads created : post count ratio?

=> Diverse.
Did your curiosity get the best of you and you decided to rerun the search in ascending order? If so, what lemons came up in the search?
=> No need: they’re almost all lemons. Only 3 of my threads made it to 1000 views, only 6 to 500.

Holy shit, the most popular of my 257(!) threads got 17,335 views!

I’m famous!

The one of which I’m most proud is ‘A new prejudice for the masses’, but that only got 3,812 and doesn’t make my top 5.

Too lazy to answer any of your questions though!

Star Trek II - The Wrath Of Khan (SPOILERS!!)

Spawn of Satan bread slicing people!

You’ve got to like your own stuff, don’t you? But, it’s the replies and interactions I like about these threads.

Are the forums your results are in diverse, or are they limited to one or two?

Cafe Society - 12 (I am the Ultimate Trekker!)

Did your curiosity get the best of you and you decided to rerun the search in ascending order? If so, what lemons came up in the search?

Well… yes. Especially since you asked first. :stuck_out_tongue:

What is the term for a shared name (like Henry V, Henry VIII)?

Need diet/exercise ideas for kidney stone sufferers

Gene Roddenberry’s birthday

Least number of views overall: 17 for Need a Title for Baker’s “Finish the Sci Fi Story” story.

Man, I have started some crappy, crappy threads. Most seem to be me complaining about my problems…ugh, I am a whiny bitch.

What is your threads created : post count ratio?
=>Well, I’ve started 154 threads, and I have, what, about 2,000 posts? That’s less than 10%.
Are there any on the 1st page of results you were surprised to see?
=>Yeah, about half of 'em. The most shocking was “Name my Hamster” was #6 with 52 replies and 342 views
Were there any threads you thought for certain would have showed up in your top 25 and didn’t?
=>I don’t recall very many of my threads, so no.
Were there any you almost forgot about?
=>Most of them, actually.
Are the forums your results are in diverse, or are they limited to one or two?
=>Mostly MPSIMS. By a longshot, actually.
Did your curiosity get the best of you and you decided to rerun the search in ascending order? If so, what lemons came up in the search?
=>A ton. I have 8 threads with 0 replies and 15 threads with 1 reply.

I also noticed that I tend to have bad thread titles, with undescriptive, confusing, or just plain bad puns or plays on words. Ack.

[/li][li]Did your curiosity get the best of you and you decided to rerun the search in ascending order? If so, what lemons came up in the search?[/li]
=>All my posts are lemons. My highest view and reply thread is Fucking Yankees! with 1334 views and 89 replies. My worst thread is Anyone want to sell me Nerf Indoor Golf, with 0 replies and 15 views. Ouch. Aside from that, I notice that I have a peculiar habit of completely killing a thread. It can be a great thread, and I put my 2 cents worth in, and no more replies grace that thread. Perhaps I’m a curse. :frowning: Perhaps I offer no insight that is useful to the board…oh well, you’re stuck with me!

Ouch…that’ll teach me. Always remember, preview is your friend. Sorry about that one, guys.

What is your threads created : post count ratio?
=> I’ve started 20 threads, though one was by mistake. I’m not sure how many posts I have… 1500? 1800?
Are there any on the 1st page of results you were surprised to see?
=>They were all on the first page,
Were there any threads you thought for certain would have showed up in your top 25 and didn’t?
=>Nope.
Were there any you almost forgot about?
=>There were a few panic-induced ones near the bottom of the list, and the GD one I (rather embarrassingly) seem to have forgotten about right after I created it.
Were there any you enjoyed rereading? If so, feel free to post a link (by right clicking the title, copying the shortcut and pasting it).
=>My favorite one was the What’s the first news event you remember thread that went for three pages. I also liked the 2001: A Space Odyssey one. Those are no.s 2 and 3, respectively.
Are the forums your results are in diverse, or are they limited to one or two?
=>I’ve posted in every forum from GD on down. GQ: 7; GD: 1; CS: 4 (not counting the mistake thread); IMHO: 1; MPSIMS: 4; Pit: 2
Did your curiosity get the best of you and you decided to rerun the search in ascending order? If so, what lemons came up in the search?
=>Not an issue; they were all on the first page.

Not this time, killer. [Alice](I only call you killer cuz you slay me)[/Alice].

See that, it only took 35 minutes, but I woulda got a laugh out of seeing this thread get a case of the Jman Jinx.

The answer to your post count query is hidden under Castle Anthrax.
Or in Biggirl’s case: right under Right here

I don’t know, I kinda like:
Singing horses!,
It all starts again tomorrow…, and of course:
Winamp time measuring thingy…

But my all-time favorite IMHO title has gotta be: USB…with 200! as a runner-up.

Accordin’ to my search, I’ve started 433 threads.

Fewest responces to a thread? Zero. After that, there were quite a few that only received 1 reply. Only one thread was locked.

I was surprised to find out that the “Forgotten/Ignored Star Trek Technology” thread was the second most popular one I’ve ever posted. And the “Christian dopers…would a Pagan “heaven” be a Hell to you?” was #3 (Didn’t see THAT one coming). The “What weapon should I use to hunt a Tyranosaur?” thread actually came in at #5.

Forget just “tooting” my own horn…you ever see an action movie where someone gets killed in a car crash, and their body is slumped into the steering wheel, holding the horn down? I’m doing that.

[li]What is your threads created : post count ratio?[/li]
31 threads started, 561 posts - around 6%. Typical - I like joining discussions rather than beginning them myself.
[li]Are there any on the 1st page of results you were surprised to see?[/li]
Nah, not really.
[li]Were there any threads you thought for certain would have showed up in your top 25 and didn’t?[/li]
Again, no.
[li]Were there any you almost forgot about?[/li]
I don’t even remember this day, but it seems like it really sucked at the time.
[li]Were there any you enjoyed rereading? If so, feel free to post a link (by right clicking the title, copying the shortcut and pasting it).[/li]
I’d totally forgotten about my sandwich thread, which made me giggle.
[li]Are the forums your results are in diverse, or are they limited to one or two?[/li]
There’s something from all of the fun ones, save GD.
[li]Did your curiosity get the best of you and you decided to rerun the search in ascending order? If so, what lemons came up in the search?[/li]
I’ve only got 31. Fairly unnecessary.
[/ul]

And I really hit it big with my “Question Game,” with 561 replies and 3,527 views. Next closest? 59 replies (a thread about H.P Lovecraft) and 1,502 views (on the topic of masturbation). Colour me unsurprised with those results.
