I don’t see it as “not hiding” because she was hidden in the first place. I see it as purposefully opening herself up to those comments - bad and good.
You can’t reasonably expect to gain anything productive or even change a single mind by arguing with the types of idiots who would actually go to her MySpace page and leave nasty comments based on a set of photos they saw on some message board somewhere. So why would you do it? You say she’s standing up to the ridicule, no matter how futile or utterly pointless that may be. I say she’s doing it for the attention.
Without peeking inside her head, I suppose neither of us can know for sure who’s right.
I’d just like to ask, what’s so bad about being an attention whore? Yeah if you cause drama and grief unto others just to get attention obviously that’s bad, but, without having any extra information, what’s so bad about being an attention whore?
I thought for sure “she” was a dude until I saw her Myspace. She has a definite bulge in her panties in one of those shots. Her body honestly looks like it belongs to a teenage boy more than a 22 year old woman to me, and either way it’s not a great body. Ribs showing + belly flab is not a good combination; it reminds me of my skinny friends in high school who never exercized and drank a ton of beer. But there is more than makeup between her and a hot girl. Not making fun here, but something is wrong with her face. She looks like she’s had some kind of reconstructive surgery. There are several lines on her face that look like they could be scars, and she seems at least mildly incapable of not making that weird smile. It’s in EVERY picture and she must know it’s not attractive. I’m not a surgeon and I’m not saying anything with complete confidence but look here and here for example. She might just have the perfect storm of “face fat”, mandible size mismatched to skull, and oversized, misshapen nose, but I would think there would be Vegas odds on that. I’ve never seen anyone with that many undesireable features combined. And I’m still not 100% convinced she’s not a guy.
I definitely feel for her; she’s handling it a lot better than I would. I admire her confidence, assuming she’s for real and not some aspiring starlet or sociology major working with a makeup artist to put us all over, which is far-fetched but conceivable. I would be mortified and want to disappear off the face of the Earth if I got famous for being ugly. And I’m not proud of this but I gotta admit . . . I laughed my ass off at that thread. The prescience of the guy who responded “first” set me off.
It’s kind of selfish. Other than that, not much. If there was a term that conveyed the concept better than (the too harsh, IMHO) “attention whore,” I would have used it.
And I strongly suspect that the same guy is the OP of this thread. Right under his name on that board his “status” or whatever it’s called is listed as “brb makin epic threads”… his sig says “Remember Epicness” and has a link to that very thread… and his name here at the SDMB is “EpicNonsense”…
Hell of a lot of coincidence if you ask me. I think it’s an attention-seeking troll who made a mean thread and is trying to spread it around the internet on as many message boards as possible.
“Epic” is an incredibly common “Internet word” these days: epic win, epic fail, epic thread, epic pwnage, etc, etc. It’s not quite the coincidence it would have been had this happened in 1999.
Also, the user on the other board lists his location as IL, but EpicNonsense lists his as HI. He could be lying, and he could have signed up here a couple months ago and made 200-odd posts in anticipation of this event, but I’m just not seeing it.
The fact that he doesn’t refute it says a lot. The fact that “epic” is used in both OP’s says even more. I’m making some progress on identifying him, by the way.
I see a lot of comments on the last two or three pages (and a whole lot of signatures with comments) about how it’s a huge epic thread because it got over a million views.
Well, posting it here certainly advertised it around more, eh? Throw on a couple more 100 or 1000 or so?
I didn’t laugh. Guess I’m not an asshole.
It’s hard not to think, on some level, that the OP didn’t link to that thread just to get more views. I don’t think that’s unreasonable thinking. But then again, that’s just being like those 9/11 conspiracists, right?
If it does turn out to be him, I think it would be funnier (in a depressing sort of way) than some pictures of an ugly chick followed by sixty pages of 4chan dropouts posting played-out image macros.
OpalCat, you’ve been here long enough to know better than to call anyone a troll outside the Pit. If you suspect anyone, report the post or otherwise contact a mod and let us deal with it.
To begin with, no insults are allowed outside the Pit. Secondly, this is exactly why we don’t allow accusations of trolling; the detective games are childish and do nothing more than derail threads.
If you suspect anything, report the post and talk with a mod. Otherwise–and this goes for everyone–keep any further trolling discussions out of this thread.
So she was hiding… and now she’s not. But you don’t see that as not hiding? What part of “purposefully opening herself up” do you think is inconsistent with the idea of “not hiding” when attacked by hundreds of assholes?
In your mind, how would not hiding look different from what she’s done? Could you maybe articulate why the fact that she was previously hiding makes such a difference to you? What would your reaction be if her myspace page had never been private and she chose to keep it that way? Would she no longer be attention seeking?
Dude, that’s six questions. Pick your favorite for me to answer if you want, but I’ve written enough about a subject that I really don’t care about to keep going this way.
It appears she’s set her MySpace back to private. As for why it was public-maybe she wanted people to see how she looked in better pictures?
As for the original pics, I think it’s as, others have said, the expression and the make-up. Other than that-does laughing at the LOL cats and the goofy photoshopped animation of the guy stabbing himself in the eyes with a fork count as being an asshole?
Tuckerfan, as the one who started the thread, I think you need to read it again. It had mostly to do with the fact that the guy was a control freak and a misogynistic dick than how he looked. But whatever you want to believe.
Shields down, captain! If you’ll recall, I participated in the mocking of that dude. I linked to it to counter the claim that women don’t post threads mocking guys, not to somehow downcheck you.
Well, you seemed to be implying we were mocking the dude based on his looks. I don’t believe his looks were even mentioned. (Sadly, the site seems to be gone. Too bad.) THAT’S what got to me.
