The Great MMP Semi-Offical List of Mumpers for this Week

Gotta errand a bit today, otherwise sloth. Minor laundry and a pot roast on tomorrow’s agenda, as well as more sloth. Throat is still unhappy.

Here you go:

I had already looked one up and it sounded so delicious I am making plans to show up on flyboy’s doorstep at 5:01pm some Friday afternoon. Wanna come?

Tiptoed over to that lost hours site of metal mouse’s too. It was pretty entertaining as well.

About this you complain?
Would Dillinger complain about not being on the Most Wanted list?

I was wrong about the ‘reverse’ Manhattans. We just had regular Manhattans.

FWIW, here’s the recipe I use. (Of course, I don’t need the recipe anymore. )

Our once-a-winter snow event arrived on Thursday. On Friday I shoveled the front walk of its 2" cover and threw down some ice melt. Then the freezing rain moved in, laying down at least a quarter inch of ice. Then it snowed on top of that. The front steps were a mess this morning, so I put on cleats and went out and chipped/cleared them off, then shoed manfully over to the car, which was also covered with a quarter inch of ice, got the door open and ran it until the cold-engine light went out. I also plugged in the battery blanket in the RV and a space heater inside the coach while we’re in freezing temps.

The big news is that my wife and I scored a vaccination appointment for the 23rd. Hopefully it doesn’t fall through for whatever reason.

Well, folks. My water pipes have frozen in the basement. 140 year old house and all. Old wiring, old furnace (have none at the moment, since October), water water pipes, etc. have a plumber downstairs right now thawing the pipes. The estimate is a minimum of $532 since it is time and a half for the weekend. 4th house today he has thawed papers at and our weather is supposed to stay this way til next weekend.

@$#!^!^&!@!!

Once he goes I’ll have to go out heat tape buying and get the pipes wrapped so they stay thawed. Ain’t life grand?

Supposedly this is a once in 20 or 30 year freeze. I sure hope so, dammit!.

That sucks. Happened to us in Anchorage the first winter we lived in our condo, but it was a hot water pipe for one of the heating zones (hydronic heating). Couldn’t figure out why it happened and finally located the problem. When the place was built, some knucklehead plumber ran that zone pipe across (and under) the front door. That’s normally okay, but he didn’t insulate it. So even though we had the nighttime temp set for 68, that particular spot froze.

Howdy Y’all! We may have set a new record for sloth today. OK, I did walk down to the mailbox, heat up soup and make cornbread. So, I have not been a hunnert percent sloth. OYKW, on the other hand… Oh and I pulled a brisket outta da freezer. All this talk of corned beef n cabbage put a gnawin’ and a cravin’ on me. So, tomorrow we shall have corned beef 'n cabbage with carrots and N.O.T. Been a dreary, rainy, cold day today as will tomorrow be, so that sounds like a good idea for Sunday foodstuffs.

MetalMouse I bookmarked that site. I foresee many wasted hours there.

{{{CupCakes}} we love you more than our Louis Vuitton luggage!

Could someone explain what you guys mean by ‘corned beef’? On this side of the pond, corned beef comes in tins - mostly from Argentina.

Boo oh that stinks. I also have an old house. Last winter the pipes froze and burst inside the kitchen wall. Now I keep a cabinet open all winter. Best of luck. Hmm better go and check on the space heater where the pipes come up from the ground.

They’re calling for 8-12 more inches of snow Monday to Tuesday, so yay.

But on the plus side, I’ve got chicken getting ready to be pulled for tacos and another breast being brined in an attempt to make corned chicken. We’ll see if teh interwebs are helpful.

Stay safe, all.

Corned beef is basically a salt and spice brined brisket. Sort of pickled beef.

When done right it’s fricken delicious.

Dinner was very yum. Daughter and Roxy stayed. They just got home - fortunately, the rain didn’t freeze along their route. We’ll have ice cream later. Chillage is the order of business for the rest if the evening.

nellie, I like that quote.

Welcome back baker. Kick off your shoes and stay awhile.

I’m with silenus re the Manhattan. That’s the way we used to make them when I tended bar.

Glad you and the missus have and appointment to get shot cookie. I’m looking like sometime in April or May.

Got soem stuff started and other stuff done in the studio today, finished the laundry, dusted :gasp:, and fixed a tasty supper. The roast came out of the dutch oven falling off the bone and today is the kind of day a meal that keeps the oven running for three hours is welcome. We haven’t gotten the predicted precipitation (knock wood), but it’s cold as foxtrot outside.

Evening all. Soccer involved coaching 2 games and refereeing 3, so I didn’t get out of there until 5pm. Dinner has been inhaled (before that my calorie intake for the day was two cupcakes and a Mountain Dew) and not much activity is planned. 31F right now but no moisture falling, so we’ll stay snow-free for now (the coming week is not so certain).

Cupcakes, my most humble apologies. I went back a couple of weeks to check, but obviously my memory ain’t what it used to be…

BBBoo, at least they haven’t cracked/leaked yet. That really begins to get into the money. Hope the tape helps.

Cookie, happy news on your appointment; I’m still in wait mode. There are three nearby Wal-Marts that will be doing vaccinations, but they aren’t taking appointments yet.

Bumba, glad the tree collapse didn’t do major damage. Flyboy could probably use the wood…

VanGo, (which I finally understood), I think that’s a good name–short but distinct. So shall it be entered in the Chronicles. That noted, 30" is a bit much; hope you don’t see much more.

Flyboy, Why did you mention Fabrique Nationale? I worked with them on a Foreign Military Sales project (can’t even remember who for) many years ago, that’s why I’ve heard of them. Pretty good company.

Ok, dinner is happily digesting and house is warming up (nor reason to raise the temperature about 67F while I’m gone most of the day. All ya’ll take care now.

The restaurant doesn’t have rye, so they use bourbon or Crown Royal or another whiskey. At home, the rye is for Vieux Carrés. FWIW, Costco has Bulleit rye and Bulleit bourbon for a bit over $58 for two litre bottles, including the rather steep state taxes. (They’re $38-something before taxes.)

Huzzah! It stopped snowing. I strapped on me mukluks and hauled the trash to the compactor. Then I went to check the mail. I’d say we got 9-10". Nothing’s been shoveled or plowed. I heard wolves howling and saw Yeti preparing to wing me with a snowball, so I came in. This place is wimp-ifying me. I grew up in Chicago and have lived in MA, MT, and WY, so 9-10" shouldn’t feel like an adventure. It does.

VanGo, very clever! I hereby award you the Mumper Award for Poetry. Enjoy your 50¢ off McDonald’s coupon.

Boo, frozen pipes are a b-tch. Did you leave water trickling? Not that that always works. I bet plumbers wake up every day in February and say, “Gotta work, but day-um that villa on the Riviera is getting closer ever’ day!”

Baker, your not getting on the list had everything to do with our shortcomings and none with yours. I thought of you when I asked about shoe, but then I thought you were such an obvious inclusion, maybe there was something I didn’t know/understand, and I wimped out. I’m so sorry. Glad to see you here and hoping you update us.

Nettie, hope your throat calms down.

Boo (again), I looked up the cocktail recipe this morning. I canNOT figure out how I have such a full bar cart but lack the ingredients for this cocktail. OK, here’s what I have:
vodka (3 kinds)
bourbon
Irish whiskey
gin Sapphire)
rum (light and dark)
tequila
dry vermouth
ouzo
limoncello (2 kinds)
Galliano
Grand Marnier
various liqueurs
bitters
simple syrup
16 bottles of wine (red and white)

NO sweet vermouth, NO brandy, NO rye whiskey. Hmph.

Also, what’s the deal with bitters these days? At the liquor store, I see things like lavender bitters, orange bitters, celery bitters. Madonn’. What’s up with all these bitters? I keep imagining Frasier and Niles Crane one-upping each other: “Celery bitters? I take it that’s common Pascal and not celeriac?” [strained laughter]

“Chopped Liver” is your MMP nickname?

notalwaysright.com has had Lady SCAdian and me snickering for a long time.

I’m not Flyboy, nor do I play him on TV, but I’ll hazard a guess:
“it’s Fabrique Nationale snowing.” = “it’s FN snowing.” = “it’s effin’ snowing.”

One of the reasons I joined SubVets was for the corned beef & cabbage dinner every March. Tom always slices the meat about an inch and a half thick, and I’ve been able to go back for seconds every time I wanted to.

herald, you may have my portion of corned beef. Contrary to my Irish ancestry, I am not a fan. The Poles will disown me for not being a fan of kraut too. :stuck_out_tongue:

That is correct.

This is the first time I’ve shared that phrase with anyone.
