The Great MMP Semi-Offical List of Mumpers for this Week

@overlyverbose

My girls are three years apart. Two teen aged girls in the house at one time is an experience.

Morning all. Made it to nearly 8am today, like FCM I am staying up later and getting up later than I did for most of my working life, and you know, I kinda like it that way… As for languages that are not English, I failed one course in my whole life-French in 8th Grade and then managed to pass 9th Grade Spanish with a D. And that ended my voyage into other languages. I admire those who can communicate in multiple tongues, but I have no talent in it.

talky, sooner or later, kids get exposed to that stuff, and with the internet these days, it’s often sooner. Sounds like you handled it about as well as anyone could, and that she felt that she could confide in you says lots.

Happy B’Day Doggio!!!

{{flyboy}} and Mrs. L.A. Hope she can get some relief. And hope Tonka does better.

Need to get reasonably presentable and go forth to mail a bill and pick up a couple of provisions, but since it’s due to get near 70F today, I’m willing to wait a bit as the day warms up. Rain tonight and tomorrow and temps nearer the February norm the rest of the week. Ah well, Spring is coming…

All y’all have a good Hump Day.

That sounds…loud. Really, really loud.

Finally heard from FCD this morning. His dad apparently had some sort of seizure - unresponsive and not moving for some minutes. He’s (FIL) blowing it off. MIL’s sister who they’re visiting is a nurse - so at least there’s that. And now I get to worry that he’ll die during this trip. And what if this had happened while he was driving?

talky - the internal screaming doesn’t end with kids.

Back to bagging bags today, so I was sweating instead of freezing. And I got an automated B-day email form work. It makes me all warm and fuzzy. Or maybe it’s just the cat on my lap. I had bagels with creamed cheese and smoked trout for breakfast, because why not?

Dunno, I don’t have kids. But I do remember my parents’ cocktail hour martinis starting earlier when I became a teen.

FCM, EEK!

Regarding languages, I did French and German at school. I don’t remember much French, but I can still about get by in German- not aided by the fact that basically all Germans seem to speak English anyway. I actually went on a 2 week German exchange visit, and I was the only one from my class who wound up speaking any of the language- because I wound up staying the second week with an English emigrant family (no, I have no idea why they signed up for an exchange either).

The last time it came in useful was in Poland- younger Poles all apparently learned English at school, but older folks all learned German, so as my Polish is about 5 words, I wound up trying to communicate in half-forgotten school German a few times. The only other time it really came in handy was in dealing with some very rude German backpackers- we’d been sharing a room for several days, before I answered one of the questions one had asked the other- in German, which they’d been speaking loudly in front of the English idiot until then (I don’t mean they were rude for speaking German, they were just generally unpleasant). They were a lot less rude after that, obviously not quite sure how much I’d understood…

Irk’s over for the day. I think I’ll head out to the shops, as the roads now appear safe, I have no beer and I want more fresh food.

Nut - on a high school trip to Italy, we met up with a group of Italian students who didn’t speak English and we didn’t know Italian, but we all knew some French! It was a hoot!

{{{Tonka}}}

I took a semester of Latin and a couple of semesters of German 1 in high school. Only the Latin has stuck even a little. But you have to work at it to live in SoCal and not pick up at least a smattering of Spanish, not to mention Hmong, Vietnamese and in these parts Thai and Portuguese. Apparently I speak rather fluent Drunken Spanish according to witnesses.

Cool, cloudy and damp around here. No rain but the concrete was all wet this morning from the fog. The outdoor cats were not amused. But I don’t have to go out in it, so as long as it doesn’t delay my orders from Da Jungle I don’t really mind the weather.

Happy Birthday, Doggio!!

Happy Hump Day, everyone!

Happy Birthday Doggio

I first read that as the kids screaming. It’s true either way.

Yesterday we had unforecasted rain again. Today we have sun and then (maybe) another round of storms. We had The Habit for dinner.

Did you know that Very Small Dog (AKA Pixel) likes to imitate a cat and hop and down on my keyboard? He has things to say and I am failing to pay him adequate attention.

Talked to the MS doc again yesterday. I have some new symptoms and he wants more tests. Sigh.

I’m watching the trial in the background. It’s stressful but important.

Take care y’all.

Happy Birthday Doggio

Happy Birthday, Doggio!!!

Hope Mrs. LA feels better today.

Sorry to hear about FairyChatFIL, Mom..

Visited Vampirella this morning. I have an appointment with my PCP next week and he wants a blood test every time I come in. A good idea, but not really comfortable for me.

I stopped on the way home and got some Mocha Mix and flavored water. When I got home Wifey had my coffee ready for me and had an omelette prepped. I could get used to this married business.

She’s watching the trial on TV now. I could miss it, personally. I’ve known T**** was a liar and a thief and a douchnozzle for 30+ years. It makes me sad more than angry, but both emotions obtain here.

#le sigh#

Y’all be careful out there.

Doggio’s birthday? Happy Day! I’m giving you a 21 bark salute. The neighbors won’t mind: they have a chihuahua, so they owe me one. Hope you get cake!

Flyboy, hoping for an encouraging health update on Mrs. LA. Sending good vibes to Tonka Cat, too.

Laundry is chugging away. When it’s dry and has been put away, I’ll go for a long walk. We’re supposed to get snow tomorrow. The NWS keeps changing the numbers: it was 50%, then 80%, and now it’s 60%. We were going to get 2-4", now it’s half an inch but they’ve added more days of snow. Wonder what terms BooFae’s weather app would use.

Old Flame called me today. I’d told him no calls for awhile, as I was a mess from losing Someone Very Dear. I hate crying in front of people. He held off but was too worried to wait any longer. He said he’d have been OK with my crying, but I wouldn’t have been.

In a wild fit of abandonment, I bought chocolate chips yesterday with thoughts of warm cookies with melty chunks of chocolate. I need cookies like a hole in the head. Maybe I should make some to honor Doggio’s birthday, though?

wordy, for a brief time, my folks had FOUR teens in the house. Mom used to point to her grey hairs and say, “This one is from the time I caught your sister hitchhiking. This is from when you didn’t get home until 2 a.m. This one…” I’m sorry your daughter got such graphic nastiness and at such a young age. How upsetting for her and for you. Seems like you just can’t block all avenues of such stuff these days.

Happy birthday, doggio! (If today’s your birthday, where’d the cake go? Did you eat the whole thing already?)

You got that right!

My sister did that. The oldest was three years and two months older than the youngest.

If he doesn’t want them, I’ll help you with any excess.

German was one of my favourite classes – with one of my favourite teachers – in high school. My school offered four years each of German, French and Spanish, and one year each of Latin and Russian. I think German Club had as many members as all the other language clubs combined. I was in my third year of German when I dropped out. Three years later I started working in a bakery; the manager and three of the other workers were German nationals, so I got a bit of practice there, but then didn’t use much German until the skimmer I was on spent two weeks in Norway, when it came in handy deciphering signs.

The year before Norway we’d visited Portugal, and I had a great time in the Naval Museum, using what bits of French, Spanish and Italian I knew, plus my knowledge of naval history, to read about 70% of the placards there. Aren’t language families wonderful? And a few years later I ended up translating menus in France and Italy for the guys I was with. (My French is mostly kitchen- and cooking-related.)

I was in German Club in high school. We were the smallest club on campus until we annexed the French Club!

:rimshot:

Thanks for all the birthday wishes.
NOW GET OFF MY LAWN!

Evening all. Shopping and mailing were done, a long, hot, soaking bath taken, the Sudoku’s and Jumbles completed without having to ‘peek’ at the answers, and a Wednesday New York Times sits ready to be read this evening. Life is Good. Need to fix my Chee-booger here in a bit, and get ready for the rain that is promised by all the weather-folk for tomorrow.

Think about getting new gutters, they are as old as the house (24 years) and since I got a new roof and paint job 3 years or so ago, it probably wouldn’t be a bad idea. Also found a coupon in the mail for air duct cleaning and it has been quite awhile since I had that done, so looks like I’ll get to help the economy some.

herald, a lot of museums around the world have English translations available–the last two major places I was in (The Vasa Museum in Stockholm and The Shanghai Museum in China) were not hard on English speakers. But it is nice to be able to go into a place on a whim and interpret the signs.

Bumba, my Doc is just happy to grab a couple vials of my blood when I show up for my annual physical. Never had to get one early.

FCM, seizures are not good anytime, but with a 90+ old man…I really hope they and you can convince him to move somewhere that’s safer for him and wife.

OK, that Burger has a reservation and it’s time to check it in. All y’all take care.

OMG! It seems I may have a talent for entering grant applications. PWAISDN got notification that he’s receiving a small business survival grant from the state. No creative writing needed, but it was a crazy paper chase. It’s almost enough to cover his salon/shop rent for most of when he was unable to work, so it’s better than nothing.

The sucky part though is it’s apparently taxable as there was an IRS form W9 in the final acceptance and approval documents.

My doc requires fasting bloodwork be done a week before my semi-annual once-overs. Or, in this case, a 90-day recheck in March. She took me off my cholesterol meds and she wants to see if I need them any more, or if I can get by with a smaller dose. So that’s fun.

Yay, gotti!! That’s great news, even if it’s taxable money.

I did a video chat with my daughter this evening, and we connected with FCD also. He passed the tablet to his mother and I got to talk to her forehead - she was unclear on the concept of where the camera was. But they all got to see Roxy, which is all they care about. FIL looked fine, but I’m still going to see where all the doc-in-a-box are located around us, just in case. They’ll be here day after tomorrow.

We had snow earlier, but now it’s just wet out there. More white stuff may move in overnight. Or not - who knows…

Laundry and baking tomorrow, so probably no reason to leave the house. I’ll have to go get a few things on Firday before they get here. I don’t think I like living alone.

{{{the LAs and Tonka}}}

Happy birthday doggio

wordy, my last couple of years at home, my parents had five teenagers in the house. :open_mouth:

sunny, Pixel’s a chihuahua; his job is to be a lap dog.

Irked (it was a light day) and now am off for the weekend. I’m gonna sleeeeeeep in tomorrow.

Stay safe and healthy y’all!
