The Official "Lost" Questions Thread - Season 2

I suppose it should be rewritten to ask why Sayid thinks she’s dead.

Wanted to offer my appreciation for the thread as well. As a guy who doesn’t quite follow the weekly Lost thread religiously this one is a help, though some organization improvements would be key.

My biggest desire is that the questions somehow be linked to their answers and that maybe the source of the question be referred to.

I suppose a fair solution would be to link the “Answer” to the post which answers the question and link the question itself to the post that poses the question with maybe a additional note of which episode, i.e. “2.13”, the question and answer popped up in.

I’m glad to hear it. That’s pretty much what I was shooting for when I started the first thread. I am planning to restructure things for next season. I just haven’t decided how yet. Any suggestions are welcome.

In the meantime, feel free to toss out any questions or answers. I’m afraid some minor real life issues require my attention today.

  1. Why did the plane crash?
Possible answer: The magnetic anomaly caused it during a “system failure” when Desmond failed to push the button in time.

  2. How did a polar bear and a horse get on the island?
The Polar Bear was part of the Dharma project’s experiments.

  3. Did Locke actually see the monster? And if he did, why is he still alive?
Probable Partial Answer: Yes. Eko also encountered the monster and survived. We don’t know why.

  4. Was the psychic legitimate, and if so, what did he see in his vision?
Elaboration: He told Eko he was a fake, but given the themes of that episode and the season (he really was involved in a miracle, and the button really was important despite evidence otherwise), we shouldn’t take his word for it.

  5. How did Hugo get the nickname “Hurley”?

  6. In what way is Hurley known as a warrior?
These don’t seem important to me. I doubt we’ll get answers.

  7. What is the significance of the black smoke?
Elaboration: What is the smoke monster?

  8. Who drew the map (and what is its significance)?
    Answered: Kelvin and his predeccessor

  9. Who burried Henry Gale?
I think we can assume it was the Others. Their appearance is a sham, and they certainly don’t consider themselved savages.

We should add:
What is the significance of the foot?
Why did the Others release Walt after going to such trouble to get him?
Why couldn’t Desmond sail away and why wouldn’t Michael be able to return?
Was Libby working for the Dharma Project/the Others?

The black smoke question arose when it seemed to signal that the Others were going to steal a baby, right? And Sayid knows which leaves to burn to get black smoke. These seem to be separate from the smoke monster, but the question could be amended to “What is the significance of the black smoke, and is it related to the smoke monster?”

Menocchio, good stuff. I am considering 2 as answered and 3 as at least a partial answer. Also 81.

While we have information on 15 and 21, we don’t have solid answers. 21 specifically may be left up in the air forever, but some ambiguity on these questions are OK with me.

25 and 26 are included for completeness and I’m hoping they’ll get referenced in a flashback.

As cbawlmer said, the black smoke was in reference to the end of last season and may not mean anything. If it doesn’t get a mention by, say, the middle of season 3, I’ll remove it.

You’re probably right about 82, but I’m going to keep it on for a while longer to see if it goes anywhere. If not, we’ll remove it.

All good additions. I’m also going to add:

What was the “room” that the Others threatened Walt with?

Editorial note:
Sometime next week I plan a final clean up on the list plus a summary post for the season. Later.

What force propelled the hatch door to where it lodged in the sand on the beach?

Didn’t you just answer your own question there?

Personally, I think we’re dealing with Comic Book Science in this show. Anyway, what happend in the hatch seems to me to be more of a cliffhanger than anything else. If it doesn’t get answered right away next season, then it’s a real question. I’ll keep it in mind for then.

I’m not a physicist. My answer attempt was just a WAG.

  1. What became of Alex? Raised by an Other
  2. What were the keys that Brendon took, and why did he take them? The keys to his boat.
  3. What happens if they don’t get entered into the computer every 108 minutes? Electromagnetic plane-crashing incidents.
  4. Where did Desmond go? Boat.

New ones:

Why does Not Henry want Kate, Sawyer and Jack?
Why was he willing to let Walt go to get them?

Ethilrist:

I’m waiting for confirmation on 47 that that’s the same Alex.

I’m not sure what you’re talking about with regard to 52. The question was regarding something Danielle said. Was there an answer I missed?

69 was covered already. But good catch on 74!

Another good catch on the first question. Your second one was already mentioned.

I’m planning to do the season end clean-up and summary posts on Friday barring any unforseen complications.

I just copied & pasted your list of questions into notepad and deleted everything that I couldn’t answer, or that had been answered by somebody else, or removed. 52 concerned the keys that Desmond grabbed on his way out of the hatch–he grabbed the keys, the vaccine, and, oddly enough, not the book…

Time for the Season Two round up. I’ll be doing this in three parts.

And thanks to Cervaise for his information on the mining ship.

If I’ve missed anybody - sorry about that.
A note on statistics:
The list included 89 items. If we discount the 6 questions that were removed, we are left with 83 valid questions.

We got 28 answers and five partial answers. I generally think of a partial answer as having half the info of a full answer. Using this rough estimate we get about 30 answers for 89 question.

Thus we have about one third of the questions answered. Which, coincidentally (or not) is just about what we had last year.

Finally the remaining list for next season with all appropriate removals and renumbered:

I’ll probably be making adjustments to the list for next season. I want to find a way to make it a better tool for discussing the island mysteries. I haven’t figured out how I’ll do that just yet, but this is where we stand now.

I just want to say, Trion, that you rawk.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think we at least have some information on a few of these:

Wasn’t this a result of the electromagnetic activity that eventually crashed the plane? Should I be answering a question with a question?

Again, was it the electromagnet?

The island’s magnetic powers MAY have cured him, but we don’t have a definitive answer yet. However, maybe we should add that Rose’s cancer and Jin’s infertility were also cured.

Partial answer: They wanted to give Walt some tests related to his special abilities.

The Others had to have buried him. Are we looking for specifically which Others?

It’s possible that I’m being dense or retreading earlier discussion, but I feel like we at least have some clues on the above.

Thanks for all your work on this, Trion. Since you posted about trying to find a better system for this, I’ve tried to think of one and haven’t come up with anything yet.

The plane lost radio contact much earlier in the flight, and the fact that they’d turned around for Fiji is what brought them into the island’s sphere of influence in the first place. I don’t think the radio had anything to do with the island, but I could be wrong.

Maybe this question could be rephrased into "Where does that big-ass power cable begin and end?

I’m with you on that.

The only problem I have with the Others having buried him is that we haven’t seen them bother to bury anybody else. In addition, if I remember right, he was in a nice grave with a cross on it and a cairn, yes? Certainly more than the Others would have done for someone who blundered onto the island. Of course, I could be reading too much into it–as usual.

Thank you.

Actually, they lost radio contact long before they crashed. The plane had turned arond and had been flying the wrong way for a while before the crash.

A geothermal source was mentioned as possible when they were first exploring the hatch. It hasn’t been mentioned since.

You’re right about question 10, I should include those.

49 may be answered or we may be waiting on confirmation that it was the Others. I can’t remember right now.

Ah, you’re right about the radio. It’s been at least a year since I’ve seen the pilot. And I forgot about the power cable too, since nobody ever brings it up on the show.

Ok, I have a suggestion: can we make the questions less vague, so when one looks at the list we get a hint about some of the less important questions? For instance, I cannot recall what #34 refers to. Who in the heck is Brendon?
