The Official "Lost" Questions Thread - Season 2

Time to overhaul the list.

First of all, I’m officially changing question 3 to include the horse:

  1. How did a polar bear and a horse get on the island?

I’m also changing question 5:

  1. What is powering all the electronic equipment on the island?

We have a possible answer with a thermonuclear reactor. Personally, I think this is the actual answer, but if I were to consider it answered I would be jumping the gun. I’ll leave it open for now.

Regarding the questions about Ethan - 22 and 23, I think we can reasonably consider 22 answered - Ethan was one of the others. And 23 can be rewritten as follows:

  1. How do the Others decide who to take?

This would include the question of why Claire was taken as well as all that “good person” stuff Goodwin was going on about.

I’m considering removing #30 as being too vague.

Going over the list again, I’m also convinced that question 40 and 45 are answered, but I’ll let everyone voice their opinion first.

Removing 51.

I have decided to keep 52 and 53. I’m convinced that we’ll get some information on those questions at some point. It may not be for a while, but I’m kind of expecting a Danielle flashback at some point.

I’ve read the arguments concerning question
43) Why did Kate’s mom freak out at the hospital?
and I think that what we know answers it well enough.

Questions added

  1. Why are there blast doors on the corridors leading to the geodesic dome?

  2. Why aren’t people supposed to use the computers for communication?

  3. What happens if they don’t get entered into the computer every 108 minutes?

  4. What exactly was the “incident?”

I’m going to do one question about the film.

  1. Why was the “Orientation” film cut up and pieces of it put in seperate places?

From Middleman:

Well, you may know, but I don’t. I’ll add it:

72)Why was Sayid on the television in the army recruiting station?

OK, I don’t even know what you’re talkiing about here.

To me that’s like asking the significance of the books we see in the show. They’re clues and references put in by the writers. I try not to get into that stuff.

Hmm… It is weird, but I’d say it depends on the question. Frame one for me and I’ll see what I can do.

So, currently my version of the list looks like this:

  1. Why did the plane lose radio contact?

Comments, revisions, arguments and whatever are welcome. Maybe we can get a cleaned-up list ready for when new episodes resume in January.

At the start of Outlaws Sawyer enters a hotel room with a woman, only to find Hibbs waiting on him. He sends the woman away. She is also the woman who was running the lottery drawing when Hurley won the lottery in Numbers.

(The actress is Brittany Perrineau, btw; Harold Perrineau’s (Michael’s) wife irl.)

How about:

Whose glass eye was in the second Dharma station and why did they leave it there?
Also, what evidence did you find to answer 40 and 45? I am still in the dark on those.

Oh yeah. Nah, I’m not gonna worry about that one. The lottery lady can absolutely have a fling with the mysterious bad boy with the shady past. There may be something more there, but I’m not going to assume there is until I hear more.

Good enough for me:

  1. Whose glass eye was in the second Dharma station and why did they leave it there?

Well, you’ll notice that I didn’t officially mark them as answered. As I think about things now, I probably shouldn’t have said anything about them anyway. For instance, regarding #40, I’m convinced the Dharma Initiative set up the original transmission. And we may never get something like that spelled out for us. But we should probably leave them alone for now, just in case.

Well, there is this, but I don’t know how you want to deal with spoilers and this list…

Brittany Perrineau, who plays Mary Jo, the woman who pulled out Hurley’s lottery numbers, and also Sawyer’s one-night stand, will be back for a third episode very soon. Harold explains: “I think the idea was that Sawyer was a con man, and he might want to con the Lotto girl. And she might not be a one-night stand.” Source: Kristin on E!Online

As far as spoilers go, in general I try to avoid them. (I did read that one though. I’m weak.)

Regarding spolers in relationship to this list, I’ll deal with things when they actually happen in the show. Until it appears on screen, it’s not yet cannon.

Current list for tonight’s episode:

  1. Why did the plane lose radio contact?
  2. Why did the plane crash?

Yeay! LOST is back!

I predict we will add three new questions and only get a partial answer!

I hope we at least get some hints…especially about the Nigerian Plane.

Isn’t the answer (or partial?) to #29 the fact that there is a huge electromagnetic force within the island?

  1. What is the big monster? Partial answer–big flying cloud of black smoke

  2. Did Locke actually see the monster? And if he did, why is he still alive? Partial answer–(a) because nobody would believe him, and (b) because he did nothing, just like Eko. He only got grabbed in the dynamite episode because people were running.

As to question 29, both middleman and Smeghead have argued that the magnetic force that we saw behind the wall under the hatch does not constitute an answer to this question. I myself believe it to be answered but bow to the majority vote. If a larger magnetic force exists, we only have the Orientation film’s word that one exists.

Ethilrist - I’ll agree that our extended view of the monster counts as a partial. I think the info you have for answer 15 is too vague and speculative.

You mean beside the fact that a key (?) around Jack’s neck was being magnetically pulled toward this wall inside the hatch in the first episode of this season?

Um, yes. That’s kind of what I said. Other poster have argued that the magnetic force behind the wall may not constitute a full answer to that question and that we should keep things open until we know more.

Is that the magnetic force the station was set up to examine? Was it caused by the Incident? Are the two related? Or was it placed there by the Dharma Initiative in order to mess with the heads of their psycological test subjects? Right now, all of this is unclear and has a bearing on the question.

Perhaps I should rewrite the thing so that it asks:

  1. What is the nature of the islands unusual magnetic properties?
  1. What happened to Jack’s marriage?

We’ve got a full answer on this one now. Sarah left him because he was inattentive and she was screwing around. Can’t wait to find out if her Other Man is somebody significant.

True dat.

Is there some reason we are still unsure about who took Walt?

Yeah, that’d bite if it was Sawyer…

That’s exactly who my boss thinks it was–him, or Jack’s father. I think both of those answers are too easy and out of character for Sarah.

  1. Was it The Others who took Walt? Partially answered… I notice that Zeke didn’t acknowledge Ethan as being one of his crew (he just nodded, and had a look on his face of “Who the hell is Ethan?”), so there may be more than one band of Others on the island. It may not have been The Others, it might be Some Others…

New questions:

When Sawyer called the Other “Zeke” was that just a nickname, or does he know him from previously?

Did Sawyer get shot first, or was he hit with his own bullet?

Hey, where did Desmond go?

Something has happened enough times in this series that it makes me wonder if there is some mechanic involved which is actually causing this, rather than just enigmatic writing: Why won’t they talk about their common experiences? Locke saw the TCM. Charlie and Eko saw the TCM. Locke got grabbed by the TCM. Dan’l Sawyer kilt a bar, and then he and Kate saw a horse. Claire had a psychic tell her important stuff about her kid. Hurley was cursed. The list goes on and on, and nobody ever talks about this stuff!

Those were my two suspects as well!

As for the issue of whether the magnetic field is the answer to what happened to Locke’s compass, I agree completely that we know the answer. It seems so logical and obvious that a massive electromagnet would affect a compass. No doubt in my mind that is the answer.

My objection to marking it “answered” was that we would be making a jump from “compelling evidence” to “mystery solved” without a direct explanation.

I argued that if we made that leap this time, we might make a mistake the next time.
