Okey doke - here’s what we were doing at the boat. There are no "before"pics because **FCD **had already started by the time I got there. You’ll notice that there are no sails on the boom or the headstay. I took off the mainsail - it was full of mud daubers nests - there are some pissed off wasps out there somewhere. Normally there is also a dodger - it’s like an awning on a frame that fits over the hatch into the cabin - it’s now in the cabin. All of the dock lines are doubled up. On the starboard bow photo, it looks like a white line with a shadow, but the shadow is a black dock line.
We added 2 fenders on the starboard side (between the boat and the dock) and we put 2 others on the port side, just in case the boat next to us lets go and his our boat, altho, I think if they do let go, we’re screwed. The couple that owns that boat are rookie live-aboards - dunno if they plan to ride it out on the boat or go stay with someone.
We removed the power cord, closed all the portholes and the thru-hull valves. There’s nothing else we can do. Since they’re floating docks, the tides don’t matter - the docks and the boats rise together - that simplifies how we tie it up.
And if all else fails, we have insurance, and we’re not afraid to use it!
My dad and uncle didn’t really want a big feed after the funeral, but the church ladies insisted. My dad’s been a member of that church his whole life and teaches the church lady Sunday School. Plus, my grandma was a church lady. They immediately said “Yes ma’am” and made sure that my sisters got their kids back to the church after the buryin’ to eat. There was ham slices, rolls, green beans, corn, cole slaw, deviled eggs, tiny pickles, melon fruit salad, nanner puddin’, chocolate cake, vanilla ice cream, and peach cobbler. To drink we had water and sweet tea.
That’s my family’s Southern credentials up there.
doggio, why does Gordie have a cone on his head? Every time I see a conehead dog, I think of The Simpsons: “The lamp’s running away.” Speaking of, it looks like y’all are getting an outermost outermost band of Irene. Stay safe and dry.
Here’s hoping everyone gets through Irene safe and sound.
I will keep my fingers crossed for the S.S. Moooooom.
[pirate] Thar’s a right sea-worthy craft if ever I spied one…yarrrrr. [/pirate]
Thanks for the boat pics!
Looks like you were almost as busy as Mooooom in her 'tirement today, Chance. May your weekend be fun and relaxing.
Thanks for the very heart-warming story about your gramps, Tots! He sounds like he was great to have around!
Congrats on the keen pad, doggio! Looks very cozy!
MrsMedico we have a State Store system here in my jerky backwater too. What’s worse is they only sell wine and liquor. If you want beer, you have to find a licensed beer distributor or get it a six pack at a time from a bar. Wouldn’t want William Penn’s industrious descendants getting loaded now, would we? (My town is the home of the Whiskey Rebellion…so the whole State Store thing just ticks me off…)
Cabmeister I’m glad your tootsies are feeling better. I hope you’ll fill me in on the mysteries of Brazillian food…closest I’ve ever had to that is El Salvadoran.
I love hoagies and I’m right jealous of you, swampy! I tell all my co-workers with kids to let me know when they sell 'em! Finding good eats is tough on a bachelor. I did, finally, find the american cheese they use on those hoagies that I like so much. It turned out to be the same as the Jint Iggle kind.
Supper tonite was Nip-Chee crackers and Vienna “fingers”. I was so stressed out today my appetite took a hit. At least the weekend is here! Yay!
We have state liquor stores here too. We can, however, buy beer and wine at the grocery stores. All hard liquor has to be purchased at the state run stores. So they can tax the hell out of it. Liquor here is very expensive compared to California.
Grandpa M was pretty great. Unfortunately, mesothelioma killed him back in the mid 90s.
Jawja does not have state likker sto’s. However, up until this year it has been illegal statewide to buy likker, beer or wine on Sunday. The [del]Etlanner Zoo[/del] General Assembly finally passed legislation to leave it up to local cities/counties whether or not they want Sunday sales which is how it should always have been.
Spaz sounds like a fine church lady feedin’!
I have a Vestry retreat tomorrow. Rah. Exactly how I want to spend a good chunk o’ Sattidy. We are allegedly comin’ up with some kind of “strategic plan.” I hate that. I never know what that means.
Evening news said the worst of the storm should be in our area between 10PM tomorrow and 5AM Sunday - theoretically, I’ll sleep right thru it. Unless that tree falls on my bedroom - that would suck.
Well, after an 80-hour week at work(s), I’m ready for a day off. Probably not going to happen, 'cuz I’m on call this weekend and my cow-orkers are notoriously lazy. All I ask is that none of the 7 AM’ers call in tomorrow, because having 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep would be fabulous.
Off to bed, hugs to everyone, congratulations as appropriate, and promises that I actually did read the thread.
Morning all! Up and sippin’ java since 4:30 and it’s a lovely cool 65 Fahrenheit out there with a projected high in the low to mid 80s today in my City of Three Rivers.
Looks like Irene lost some punch but I’m still keeping my fingers crossed for everyone in her path. Stay safe and check in when you can.
Later today I’ll be headed over to the gf’s place. She’s making tacos for us to munch on while we watch the Stillers game tonite. If I’m lucky, I’ll be able to stay awake until half-time. She’s also planning on cooking up a big breakfast on Sunday morning. I’m not sure if I’ll want pancakes along with my eggs and bacon.
Well, off to run my Saturday errands. I’m procrastinatin’ getting a haircut since I don’t get paid again until next week.
Oh and rosie yes we missed you. I hope you get some R & R after all that ‘irkin’!
I hope you get some sleep, donkeybear! Unplug the phone if you have to!
Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffienatin’ YAWN 'Tis 78 Amurrkin out with a predicted high of a hunnert. Now that’s hawt! Also good pool weather, but alas, I have to go retreat today.
Brick what a silly question! Of course you want pancakes with your bacon and aigs. Waffles too! Sheesh!
Get some rest donkeybear!
Poor Gordie!
Stay safe all youse in the path of Irene.
Now I go to seek more caffiene and some brekkie for rumbly tummy. Then I must purtify for retreat. Le Sigh. Ima be comfy though. I’m wearin’ shorts. I’m a rebel!
So did you all survive the night? We had a normal Friday evening here, went grocery shopping and I made chilli for dinner. We watched a film called “Stuck” which was a bit bizarre but good to watch, makes a change from some of the really oddball stuff 'im indoors puts on the rental list.
Tonight, he has decided that we shall have tacos which will be very yummy but now I have to go and look at Fat Club’s website to see if I can work out just how much damage I’ll be doing to my diet plan with that!
I have to go and make myself presentable to face the outside world soon, and then we’ll be heading into town for the usual Saturday errands. Unlike Swampy, I already have a strategic plan and I know what it means! Yes, it’s a list…
Tomorrow I will be visiting my doting parent and have a few things to take her, she asked for some plants from my garden as I have a load of love-in-a-mist and she wants some of it. I’m sure she’ll have a list of other stuff she wants me to do while I’m there, apparently that’s what visits from daughters are for.
as of 9:00am EDST, no wind, no rain. Just thick, oppressive humidity. I cancelled all my appointments and I’m staying in the a/c. irene is supposed to arrive this evening, but it will be down to a level 1 by the time it gets here. I’ll keep y’all posted as long as I have 'lectricity.
