I’ve been known to simply throw a flat sheet over the bare mattress and sleep on top of that, if laundry timing + exhaustion = necessity.
It’s drippy out, but the cats insisted so I let them out. Now two damp cats have hurtled back inside and are frantically licking themselves.
1a.) Told ya so.
2b.) When I lick something, it becomes wet. How does an animal licking something dry it off? (I’ve wondered this since childhood, when I learned that newly-born kittens, calves, foals, etc. are “licked dry by their mother.” When I tried it, I got yelled at for making whatever-it-was damp. Hmph.)
After last night’s meager (but yummy) dinner, I wanted one of those little breakfast snacker-thingies from Timmy Horton.
Alas, everyone else in town had a similar idea, and the line was loooooong. As I’d left both my cross-stitch and my phone at home, I decided “screw it, not waiting.”
Now I gotta clear space on my stovetop to make scrambled eggs or something.
Or hope their line is short when I head back out in a bit, to actually work.
A giant floppy shirt/dress thingy I use it to cover my butt when I’m in my mom swimsuit. It was actually perfect as a nightshirt, only it was a little see through, which was alarming because overlyboy kept stopping by the bedroom to chat while he was organizing himself for school. Come to think about it, no wonder I was sweating so much with the covers yanked up to my chin.
I’ve always wanted to try Tim Horton’s. Hope we get one close by soon in St. Louis. Since COVID started, anything outside my immediate 5-mile radius now seems super far away and I feel like I need to pack snacks when I go downtown.
A couple in Mount Vernon, WA whose house was flooded were being interviewed. The woman was standing in the water (which she said was cold) when she suddenly exclaimed, ‘Oh, my gosh! There’s a salmon!’ [Footage of the salmon swimming by.]
Akiko was training to be my service dog at one point, and became entirely too good at opening doors. We have to throw the deadbolt on the front door or she’ll follow me out if I need to leave.
Well, that sounds interesting… Maybe it’s time to trade with joe.
I’m glad you’re starting to dry out a bit. I’ve been thinking lately that the infrastructure we really need in this country would safely transport water where it needs to go, nationwide. A transcontinental pipeline for water. Of course, how to get it distributed to an entire region once it get there is an entirely different problem. I’ll have to think on it some more.
After the week’s worth of activity for the appraiser, the actual walkthrough took maybe 5 minutes. I’m enjoying the massively more organized house so I regret nothing. Today my body is making a stink about everything. I suspect I’ll spend most of it in bed, trying to build back spoons.
I’ve had good luck with TJ’s brined turkeys. (I cook them in a roasting bag.) I was hoping to find a smaller one, but 12 pounds was the smallest they had… and I had to dig for it.
Afternoon all. No morning missive today, I went to the library to read all about my Garmin but when I took it out of the box…all the instructions are on the internet. Now I need to let it power up and read the instructions either on-line or printed out. Ah well, I’ll figure it out by Tuesday…
Then did a little shopping (Pepsi 12-packs are 4 for $12), cleaned the soccer stuff out of the car, fixed the mid-day meal and did some internettin’ and–it’s 1pm already! Days move way to fast.
Hope our West-Coast Mumpers start to dry out some. nellie, happy the Drs. appointment went well and timing of the trains worked out.
shoe, never been to a Tim Horton’s either. Nothing close to me in North Ali-bama, maybe one day I’ll get far enough North to try them.
FCM, get the littles them involved in soccer–they run all the time, games last less than an hour, and you can comment how the parks folks aren’t taking proper care of the fields…
talky, hope you’re feeling better. And have more clothes to wear.
Sari, glad Ripple is doing well, even if it wears you out.
Unknown, I stress about airport times too–having been through over 100 of them in my life on who-knows-how-many flights, I shouldn’t, but I always respect Murphy. And Mom can think of her won jacket, IMHO, you did more than enough this morning.
OK, need to finish emptying the soccer season stuff out of the car and also plug the Garmin in the power outlet there. And then maybe read what I should be doing with the (&^(&( thing. All ya’ll take care.
I slept long and hard. I have no idea why I was so tired. One of the Seattle Uber drivers told me light rail goes from near the clinic to near the Amtrak station, so I’m going to check that out. $50 for only 1 of the 4 Uber trips is a lot.
Well, 4 months before they take full effect. I should start feeling better before then. I think I’m less itchy today, but that could be wishful thinking or the placebo effect.
In today’s It’s a Miracle segment, my daughter’s BIL was able to get to their flooded street. Water had been 3-4 feet deep but there was now only 1-2 feet against the attached garage door. He got into the house and…not a drop of water. Bone dry.
flyboy, that story is amazing. “I think I’ll do the living room in salmon.”
Moooom, can’t wait for you to hold Baby T.
OK, this is something I read years ago, so not guaranteeing it’s accurate. Looked it up when my dogs would lick themselves after a bath. (My theory was it was a ruse to show they were placid when what they really wanted was to dash outside to get rid of the nasty clean smell by rolling in horse poop.) Dogs’ tongues scoop water like spoons, but cats’ tongues somehow help them suck in the water. I think it had to do with the little projections on their tongues. I don’t know about other critters.
I am now imagining Little You industriously licking calves and cats.
I miss them, too–not just my kids’ but all the plays, concerts, recitals, and sporting events I went to because my students were in them, and it meant a lot to them if their teachers were there. Speaking of which, the HS where I taught just won state football.
wordy, sorry you had a rough go after the jab.
Yeah, we had one short day a week, and that’s nearly-universal now. There’s a buttload of curriculum cra–er, very important stuff–that has to be done these days, along with making sure everyone’s teaching the same content in the same ways, creating common assessments, what we called “lock-step teaching.” Some of it is good; some of it is a tedious waste of time, but it’s all required. Most teachers would MUCH rather be teaching (and if not, they should hang it up).
Sure. Hey, wait, you get to GRADE? Whoa. We had departmental PLC’s, with administrators walking in and out and deadlines for getting stuff done. No chance to sneak in grading, and I would’ve if I could’ve because, as you know, the grading is always there. If I could’ve graded in the shower, I would’ve. In ascending order of preference:
My daughter hates soccer - no idea why, she just hopes they won’t get into it…
And now pics!
Holding him the first time
Roxy holding him the first time
Sister sharing toys
She was very gentle with her brother and she smiled the whole time. It’ll be interesting to see how she reacts to Mama feeding Toby. Then one day, the magic will wear off and she’ll haul off and smack him for something, because that’s what kids do!
Less happy news for FCD. His surgeon had a family medical emergency come up that will take him away for 6 weeks. So he’s got an appointment with one of the other surgeons in the practice to see if he can get his knee done before 6 weeks. It was supposed to be Dex 3. Dammit.
Then he found out the surveyor who we hired to inspect the boat has come down with COVID, so he’s out of commission for at least 2 weeks. It’s a scramble now to find another surveyor, or else the sale might be delayed. So FCD is not in a good mood.
I made a grocery run to get stuff for my T-day cheesecake and cran sauce, but once I got home I realized I forgot the choc cookies to make the crust. Fine, I’ve still got time, just didn’t really want to go back to the sto’.
Hurray for baby pics and hurray for happy big sister!!!
I’m glad you are starting to feel better nellie. Don’t question the placebo effect, it doesn’t matter why you are feeling better, what matters is that you are!
No, I know what stink bugs look like and these are not those. I’ll try to get a pic next time I see one, I’ve been meaning to post one on Nextdoor for identification.
I read your first world problem complaint and would like to suggest that you use your cat iron to flatten your pieces. Spread a clean towel or t-shirt on your bed, dampen your project with filtered water (just use a spray bottle, you don’t want to soak it), flatten it on the towel and then cover with another towel or t-shirt. Tell your cats to stay off your project while you are at work. Their body heat and weight will gently flatten your work nicely in just a shift or two.
I already miss Mom, but not feeling like I need to be dressed before leaving the bedroom is nice.
I only know a few people irl who have school age children, but this is their common complaint. Just because someone is working at home doesn’t mean they can just shift gears without notice. You have my sympathy!
Yeah, that’s the worry about George. He doesn’t want to go “outside”, he just wants to be with his people. Fortunately the front door has a standard knob instead of a lever. George is cute as can be, but we are really getting tired of having an oversized kitten. Of course, in five years or so we’ll be using wistful voices when talking about how cute he was back then…
Murphy is a jerk. I happen to know that as long as I’ve planned for delays, Murphy usually doesn’t bother me. He only pays attention to me when time is short and the destination is important. I don’t mind waiting, I always have some sort of entertainment with me. I’d rather not make other people wait if possible though.
Today was free surplus produce at the community center. In years past, we got a turkey in our mid-November box. This year we got a case of ramon. Times are tough and life is hard…
We also got five half gallon jugs of milk, a dozen eggs, a couple of packages of frozen chicken breasts, a chuck roast, a bag of oranges, four honeydew melons along with some bottled energy drinks, a couple of loaves of bread and some instant oatmeal packages. I’m not ungrateful for the free food, I just had to laugh when I saw the case of ramon.
When I took the food we couldn’t use and my friend’s box to where I used to work, we had a lot of fun with the case of ramon instead of a turkey part.
Hubs was able to find a reasonable sized turkey breast for 2.49 a lb at Fry’s. We need to do Thanksgiving on Thanksgiving so we can have our shut-in friend over. He can’t cook anymore, he can barely manage to stay upright to nuke a packaged meal and I have this very sad feeling that this is his last Thanksgiving. I’m afraid it was Mom’s last one too, but I don’t want to think about that very much.
Holy shit, my nerves are janglin’ tonight… I’ve been home almost half an hour, cuddled with kitties and had a smoke, and still cannot wind down.
Okay, so it’s been dead at work the last who-knows-how-many days.
Today, the P.O.S. (that’s “point of sale” e.g. cash register, but you can guess what it also stands for) decided to go weirdly belly-up; the printer wasn’t, yanno, printing ticket orders (it has one job!); the credit card reader had all sorts of weird hiccups in sympathy and randomly rejected transactions with odd error messages nobodyhad ever seen before.
(Longtime retail employees can tell where this is going … )
Well, we got slammed on the dinner rush. Like, after night after night of twiddling thumbs (and derping on our phones, and one of us perhaps doing cross-stitch on the sly) it was just one group after another coming in, and drive-thru just would. not. stop. and don’t get me started on the online orders for pickup.
Plus the owner showed up - I haven’t seen his ass in a while - and while he’s super friendly and stuff, he also monopolized our shift manager, during the rush, for at least a solid half hour talking about who knows what.
I damn near snapped at him. It was all I could do to hold my fool tongue when he started idly chatting with me - while I’m managing three orders simultaneously and trying not to forget which drink goes with whom - and then stands right in my path & goes, “Hey, it got kinda busy, huh?”
YES DAMMIT SUPER BUSY also get the holy out of my WAY ferchrissakes!
Gah!
He is really super nice - and my boss’s boss - so normally I enjoy chatting with him. Just … bad timing, dude!
Okay, I feel better. Thanks for letting me vent. Now if you’ll excuse me, I hafta feed a buncha rats - and myself, I suppose - and entertain the cats before Monkey drives us all nuts. unknown I wish it would work to let him have a play date with your Gormless, so they could wear each other out.
For now, I’m tossing treats across the house for him to chase. He’s very good at hunting those tiny Temptation mixes.
Howdy Y’all! We did all the things and I got boostered. Right arm is kinda sore where I got stabbed and I feel a little blah. I think I shall have an early night tonight. Hopefully tomorrow I will be my usual perky bundle of joy and delight to be around.
MOOOOOOM I feel I speak for all when I say we Toby! Such a cutie. Glad RoxStar is takin’ to him so far.
OK, gonna go snoop teh intartoobz a bit then it shall be sleepy time.
I’d love for them to have play dates too. Gormless wears poor VBC out in no time at all and then gets bored. Bored kittens are never a good thing.
Gormless isn’t very food motivated, tossing plastic springs is his big thrill.
When the Best Cat in the World was alive I bought one of those treat balls that you fill with treats and kitty has to chase to make one fall out. They are supposed to entertain bored kitties for hours.
It took about a week for VBC to figure out that she could hold the ball with her paws and shake it around to empty the ball in half an hour. It was so sad watching the BCitW politely wait for his turn to play with the treat ball only to find a good smelling but empty toy. The toy is probably hiding in the back of the kitty supply closet, I could send it to you if you want?
I was slightly blah and sore after I got boosted, but it went away by morning and then I was my usual crabby self.
Evening all. Tried the Cheesecake Factory again, because how could it be busy on a Wednesday night…well, it was. Have given up trying, will go back after Xmas and see if it’s slowed down some. Went to Steak-n-Shake and boy, have they gone downhill…instead of waitresses, you now order by machine and wait at the counter for you food, then sit wherever you want. I think they’ve lost a lot of business to Wahlburgers which is nearby and wouldn’t surprise me if they close one of these days.
Came home and got the garbage and recyclables out to the curb for pickup tomorrow. Also got the Garmin charged and downloaded, will take it and the directions out for a test drive later this week. I may yet enter the 21st century…
shoe, sounds like a nice guy who really has no clue on how business is done. Hope he doesn’t plan to visit too often.
unknown, sounds like a good haul of comestibles. And as for Murphy, I lived in the U.A.E. for 4 years and have taken on the Arab philosophical saying “In’shallah” or “As God wills it” as my counter to Murphy. Still have things screwed up, but I’m much calmer about it…
OK, need to get back to internettin’ and since I bought a NY Times today at Kroger, I’ll take some time to read it tonight (Cultured, I is). All y’all take care.
A bit more terminal adorns this evening… when my daughter was nursing Toby, Roxy pulled up her shirt and offered to help!
And on that note, I’m gonna try to get some sleep… zzzzzzzzzzzz
