What's For Dinner Tonight: Episode 2021 – A New Hope

Grilled shrimp with garlic butter and chopped onions over spaghetti, cherry tomatoes with blue cheese dressing, ice water, white wine. Dulce de leche Girl Scout cookies with a glass of cold milk later that night.

Tonight is Greek Night; homemade tzatziki, grilled pita, and a salad. Haloumi Saganaki for starters and maybe Baklava for dessert with coffee.

Tonight is Anthony Bourdain’s beef bourguignon and Mario Batali’s gatto di patate napoli, with cucumber salad as our side. And then maybe a nap …

I went kind of crazy making lots of appetizers and calling it dinner.

Giant Eagle had beautiful huge shrimp, so I bought 8 and made us each shrimp cocktail to start. They had fully cooked crawfish, I bought 4 and steam warmed them. Then Rumaki. I wrapped chicken livers, pineapple chunks, and scallops in bacon.

Only change I’d make would be to use cheaper bacon. The extra thick cut stuff I used overwhelmed the stuffing.

Finally think I have figured out stir frying after 20 years. I used to put too many spices and oil and soy sauce and vegetables etc which either steamed the veggies or all the spices burned up and became bitter.
Now with the help of 66btu power burner I just heat up the wok to super hot, add a dash of sesame oil then the veggies with a sprinkle of spices , for quick stir fry and maybe a minimal dash of soy at the end.
Tasty crispy veggies, maybe ‘less is more’ may get through my thick skull one day.
Well other than bucket loads of BTUs

Steak salad (grilled steak, lettuce, chopped red pepper, celery, cucumber, onion straws, Maytag blue cheese crumbles, blue cheese dressing), cornbread muffins, ice water. Later, Dulce de leche Girl Scout cookies and Oreos with a glass of cold milk

Burgers tonight. Sound boring? I’ll put it another way. After planning for weeks to get the barbecue propane tank refilled, I kept procrastinating, and somehow managed to do a few short grillings with what must have been fumes left in the tank. Today I got it done, and arrived home with all the fresh ingredients for Wolfpup’s World-Famous Burgers, made with fresh patties that are somehow even better than those I used to get from my favourite gourmet specialty store. And tomorrow, to celebrate my newly filled tank, barbecued back ribs. And for later on, I’ll thaw a flattened Cornish game hen marinated in a Dijon mustard sauce that’s been frozen for a while. Also have giant hot dogs for lunch or snacks. Yes, grilling season is here (actually, it’s been here for quite awhile).

Snow on the deck this morning (glad I pulled the tomato plants in) so tonight was skillet gnocchi with chopped coppa de Parma, snow peas, and Marcella Hazan’s tomato sauce garnished liberally with a snowfall of Parmigiano Reggiano. Dessert will be baklava from last night.

I hate Alberta sometimes.

Pepperoni pizza from our favorite local place, Caesar salad, ice water.

I’ve been craving Chicken Saag, but my favorite place closed. So I just decided I’d make it myself.

Holy Smoke. That was yummy and pretty easy too. Of course I paid about $50.00 for it because of all the spices, but I can make this several times before I will need to replace most of those.

The leftovers today were even better.

Pancakes with butter and maple syrup, bacon, and eggs scrambled with cheese, bacon and onions.

Arnavut Cigeri (Turkish Liver and Onions). Made with calf liver. It’s served as an appetizer at a Turkish restaurant we like, I made it as an entree. With air fryer French fries.

Well, I WAS gonna have a simple dinner of sardines, with capers and sliced onion and a squeeze of lemon, on crackers, or on toast if the bread’s still good.

That sound you hear is every cat in the area heading my way. Apparently, I’ll be having herring instead. Didn’t read the can right.

(Did I forget any toppings? I haven’t opened it yet.)

Tonight was tacos from Tacodeli. We both had an excellent fundido steak taco, and a pretty good puerco verde taco. I was a pig and had a third taco, their Space Cowboy - shiitake mushrooms, queso fresco, guacamole, and grilled corn, onions and peppers. We rounded out the meal with refried black beans and rice.

Really. my only regret is we don’t have any to eat as falling apart leftover tacos later this evening.

I had a big lunch, so my dinner was just two bowls of Cap’n Crunch with Crunchberries, with skim milk. Yes, I have the cereal palate of an eight-year-old.

Tonight was chicken nugget salad, an all time fave of the boys when they lived at home. Butter lettuce, cherry tomatoes and avocado for me, shredded 5 yo Balderson Cheddar, and quartered chicken nuggets. Normally I’d drown it slightly in Ranch but we got adventurous and SWMBO had Asian sesame dressing and I had Italian Spring herb.
Crunchie bar and a glass ofMeomi Pinot Noir for dessert.

Today’s my birthday, so we’re ordering out. (As a general rule, we only eat out on birthdays and anniversaries.) I’m having a bacon avocado burger with extra avocado, fries, and carrot cake. Wife is having tuna steak with avocados and (I think) cheesecake. Daughter is having a chicken caesar salad and fries. Housemate is having mac & cheese with kielbasa.

:birthday: Happy Birthday!

Actually, Happy Birthweek.

Many Happy Returns on the Day! :birthday: :tada: :confetti_ball:

Sweet and Sour Grilled Shrimp. On the grill pan, instead of outdoors, because of thunderstorms.
