My son was visiting yesterday so we ordered Chinese from the place that I really like up the street. For him, Chinese-style chicken wings, chicken+shrimp+pork fried rice, and shrimp lo mein. For me – what else but my beloved Singapore noodles.
Lots of leftovers for tonight which is good because we’ve had a significant snow storm and I really don’t feel like going out. This Chinese place isn’t cheap, but they pack a massive quantity into each order!
We ate food from an Argentinian food truck. Perusing the menu, I ended up ordering a Milanesa sandwich, which was excellent. It was breaded beef on a hoagie bun with mayo, lettuce, tomato. Delicious.
After the truck shut down, we talked with one of the workers. I told him I loved the milanesa sandwich, which reminded me of German wiener schnitzel. He laughed. He’d been trying to think of “wiener schnitzel” to describe it to a potential customer.
English muffin pizzas with tomato sauce, grated parmesan and pepperoni, then some BBQ chips, and a glass of ice water. Later, some Vermont Country Store mini lemon cookies and a glass of cold milk.
Tonight’s theme is “simple but tasty”. On a whim a few days ago, I picked up a small Black Forest ham that looked quite nice. It had a nice smoky aroma when unwrapped, and is going in the oven shortly, to be followed by wedge-cut roast potatoes. Then I’m frying up some onion and making Bush’s homestyle beans with onions and hickory-smoke barbecue sauce. And my usual accompaniment of Spanish Tempranillo.
Back on the laminate floor installation work, so Mrs Mollusc took a batch of empanadas out the freezer and I had a glass of malbec to wash them down.
In bed , everything hurts, I think vitamin I for dessert .
Grilled breaded chicken, rice with teriyaki sauce, a tossed salad with raspberry vinaigrette dressing, and a glass of ice water. Later, two Nut Goodies and a glass of cold milk.
Continuing on with the “simple but tasty” theme: tonight will be vegetarian spaghettini – spaghettini al dente with Pusateri’s mellow semplice tomato sauce, and cremini mushrooms sauteed in Provencal garlic butter. Topped with lots of fresh-grated Parmesan. By happy coincidence, the whole box of mushrooms are small enough to be sauteed whole, which is the ideal way to do them, rather than slicing.
BTW, the previously mentioned Black Forest ham was wonderful, much better than some ordinary smoked ham I had before. Smokey, juicy, and tender. I had several dinners out of it, ate a bunch of it cold with Dijon mustard, and finished off the rest with fried eggs for breakfast.
I help our neighbors load their pigs on the truck when it’s “their time”. Tonight I’m grilling some beautiful pork steaks. Serving them with rosemary potatoes. Cabernet Sauvignon to drink.
Poke bowls, using tuna ceviche and yellowtail sashimi.
My gf drank wine, I had a bomber bottle of Chimay, brewed by monks in Belgium. I’d been saving the bottle for years but decided to drink it last night.
Although labeled 7% ABV, it was in a bottle with a cork and muselet and had a really loud “pop” on opening. Hit me way harder than any 7% normally would.
Oh yes, it’s bottled with live yeast. You letting it sit allowed that yeast to do its job making alcohol and carbon dioxide. Sadly, I’ve never had the self control to hold onto a bottle of Chimay for more than an evening, but I’m sure that was delightful. I was able to buy 4-5 year old bottles of Real Ale Sisyphus Barleywine for awhile, though. I was very sad when the liquor store I was buying them from ran out.
I’ve had a cavalcade of good meals I haven’t taken the time to document here. Tonight was a quickie. DiGornio frozen pizza, Sone IPA for a beverage, and I plan to eat the last slice of key lime pie made by my friend’s wife (several slices have counted as lunch or dinner over the last few days, it’s really good).
