Best UK #1 single retrospective: 1959

Time to close out the '50s. This year marks a point at which the UK chart starts to sharply diverge from the US chart. In America, rock music largely disappeared from the top 40 from 1959-1963, with girl groups and crooners and novelty songs coming on top until the British Invasion hit. In the UK, of course, rock & roll was just beginning to come into its own - guitar music was becoming more popular, teddy boys were turning into Mods and Rockers, one of the most successful British bands to never make it big in America was coming onto the scene, and a group of teenagers who called themselves the Quarrymen were getting ready to change the world.

18 songs topped the charts this year. What’s your favorite?

#1s vs. the Rest

I would like to have had a few picks, some good songs there for differing reasons.

Buddy Holly, but I could easily have gone for Elvis, or Emile Ford

I’ll have to listen and get back, none ring a bell for me. Can’t wait for the sixties.

“Mack the Knife” easily.

Darin’s “Mack the Knife” is also my pick with The Platters’ “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes” a strong second.

“Only Sixteen” … by Craig Douglas? What was wrong with Sam Cooke’s version?

“Roulette” is nice and got my vote.
