FWIW F-P all LHOD posted was an observation of a high correlation of being an asshole and the use of the word “butthurt” … to the degree that he did not recall its use by a non-asshole. Of course implying that its current use in this thread fit that pattern. He did not posit that use of “butthurt” was in and of itself being an asshole. When it was pointed out that he has used the word he admitted that he was being an asshole when he used it.
Does the hypothesis hold up to scrutiny? Do assholes tend to use “butthurt” much more often than other posters do? LHOD does not claim to be an exception to the pattern, (I’m betting most who have posted “shut up BigT/ard” use “butthurt” frequently) but exceptions would not invalidate the observation. Not gonna do a study of it myself but anecdotally it does seem to be a reasonably valid observation: posting “butthurt” does not make one an asshole but assholes tend be the ones who use it most often. It’s a marker, a co-variant. I am sure great insightful posters sometimes use it too, just infrequently. Which makes sense. When you are an asshole it is butt all around you and of course you will be most concerned about the status of it. Posting from brain you have more variety to see and to be concerned about. But not sure if that makes complete sense. Sometimes we are dealing with posters whose heads are up their asses … how does that fit the metaphor? Hmmm.
An interesting digression.
I think using “tard” to attack people is horrible. I have also used it (well PALATR and “retarded”) in the past. I try not to now, because I think it’s horrible and I think I was horrible for using it then. It’s possible to do something wrong and say “I should not have done that then and it’s wrong to do it now.”

I like this board a lot, but I’ve always felt that the way many people treat Big T is one of our major flaws. We’re (mostly) intelligent, responsible adults, and we can do better than that.
I don’t see anything wrong with the way Big T posts. I don’t see him as being more lecture-y in tone than anyone else. I generally agree with his ideas, though he is just as susceptible to error as anyone. But even if I felt otherwise, nobody deserves bullying.

Quite. Certain words are used with greater frequency by certain types of people. Whining that other types of people use the word upon occasion is off point and lame.
That said, I’m actually somewhat fond of the term in question and extolled its use here as part of a more general discussion of the word in GQ. So while I find LHoD’s hypothesis intriguing, it remains unproven in my considered view.
That’s funny to me because people using “whining” are pretty much the same category as people who use “butthurt”. They’re basically synonyms on the internet.
I’d figure that a Venn diagram of people who use the term “whining” and variants, and people who use the term “butthurt” would show the ‘B’ circle almost entirely overlapping the much larger ‘W’ circle.
The concepts are indeed related. Whining denotes unjustified complaint. Butthurt connotes unjustified resentment.
I concede that I my use of the term whining was a cheap shot. I shoulda stuck with complaining.
