3) Why did Josef swipe the nuclear rods and is now on his way to meet a big pile of armed Islam rebels all by his tender little lonesome, with no Russian henchmen to back him up?
A: Because Josef is a moron.

Previously on 24:

  • Dana has apparently decided that her best solution is to go and kill Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Doofus. If she succeeds, add a couple counts of murder (not juvie this time) to the aiding-and-abetting charges she’s currently racking up. All to keep boyfriend from finding out her real name is Jenny.

  • President Hassan continues to go all wingnut and is arresting everybody he knows, or who exhales in his vicinity at the wrong time.

  • Less interesting storylines aside, Jack was back in action! The torture did nothing (“Dude, they’ve killed me and brought me back before – bring on your little shock paddles…”). Jack zaps the torturemaster, escapes, sets an ambush at the fuse box, calls in CTU backup, then proceeds to capture Papa Russian as a solo act. And Renee thought she could rise to Jack-ness with her whole silly running-about, cutting-off-thumbs advancing behavior.

  • But now Josef has run off with the nukular rrrrods. So they will soon be in Farhad’s hands (and I predict Josef may get a different payment than he’s hoping for).
